Obamateurism of the Day

Seriously — if you had these four names on a paper in front of you, which of them would you be most likely to mispronounce? Barack Obama, while welcoming the national champion UConn basketball team, noted that their head coach Jim Calhoun had put himself on par with the sport’s great coaches by winning three national championships, including John Wooden, Bobby Knight, Adolph Rupp, and Mike Krzyzewski. Obama handled Krzyzewski’s name perfectly, but got a little rough on Rupp (h/t Jeff W):

Adolph Ruff? The legendary coach’s name is pronounced as it’s spelled, Rupp. Granted, this isn’t exactly on the same level as bowing to a Saudi king, but it’s a rather silly mistake … especially for such a self-professed basketball fan like President Obama, and especially since he appears to be reading from prepared remarks.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at [email protected] with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.
