Like my friend Jazz Shaw noted on Twitter yesterday, I don’t really need a presidential proclamation to make my religious observances official.  The fact that we missed hearing Barack Obama wish us a happy Easter (or Good Friday, for that matter) didn’t come as a crushing blow to my celebrations. However, this seems like a rather foolish stumble, given Obama’s often-pointed observances of other religious holidays:

President Obama failed to release a statement or a proclamation recognizing the national observance of Easter Sunday, Christianity’s most sacred holiday.

By comparison, the White House has released statements recognizing the observance of major Muslim holidays and released statements in 2010 on Ramadan, Eid-ul-Fitr, Hajj, and Eid-ul-Adha.

Don’t despair, though, because the weekend didn’t pass without some official recognition of religion:

The White House also failed to release a statement marking Good Friday. However, they did release an eight-paragraph statement heralding Earth Day.

In fact, just for fun, do a search on “Earth Day” at the White House website.  Not only will you find that eight-paragraph proclamation, you’ll find a lecture, a progress report, and a mention of “Latino Earth Day” in one of several posts about a speech about Earth Day by Council on Environmental Quality chair Nancy Sutley.  All of these were added to the website between April 19th and April 22nd, when the White House site was curiously silent on Easter.

It’s not the most egregious of slights, but a failure to note Easter with the precedents established by this administration is almost the definition of an amateurish fumble.
