Video: Servicemembers boo Griffin for attacking Bristol Palin

Here’s a little change of pace for a mid-day Monday, courtesy of TV Squad, which clipped a short segment of VH1’s tribute to America’s fighting men and women. Former Levi Johnston confidante Kathy Griffin decided to entertain them by taking potshots at the mother of Johnston’s child, Bristol Palin, by calling her fat. The audience took a few potshots at Griffin in return:

“We got two words,” Griffin continued. “BRISTOL … PALIN.” Ah. We see. Kathy was performing in front of a huge crowd of soldiers for ‘VH1 Divas: Salute the Troops.’ (Sun., 9PM ET on VH1). But as soon as she mentioned the dreaded words “Bristol Palin,” the boos started rolling in from the troops. Wait. What are we booing again? Bristol? Kathy’s sailor outfit? … Kathy’s comedy routine?

It turned out that the troops were jeering Ms. Griffin’s routine. “You’re gonna like this,” she continued gamely. “[Bristol is] the only contestant in the history of the show to actually gain weight. … She gained like 30 pounds a week. I swear to God, it was fantastic — she’s like the white ‘Precious.'”

As the cat-calls continued to escalate in volume, Kathy kept on going: “You can boo louder than that!” she said, cupping her hand to her ear. “War is hell,” she concluded. We don’t expect her to receive any sort of medal, but Griffin didn’t abandon her post — she boldly (or foolishly) stood there in the face of angry incoming attacks from the audience.

Well, if this is the best VH1 can find to entertain our troops, then they’re obviously having a problem attracting talent anyway. A Kathy Griffin appearance would be hell for most people anyway. Who ever found her entertaining in the first place? She may be the only person to gain notoriety by attaching herself to Johnston, rather than the other way around.

Anyway, kudos to our men and women in uniform who didn’t take the bait and showed a small measure of their courage in booing this disgraceful personal attack. Maybe Griffin could take a lesson from them.
