Canada's Speech Police Fine Man $750,000 for Not Saying Men Are Women—Give Money to Teachers

Trans Army

It is illegal to say that there are only two sexes, and that indoctrinating children to believe otherwise is dangerous.

How illegal? Well, at least in British Columbia, it can bankrupt you.

The same totalitarian impulse that gets Europeans arrested and American companies fined hundreds of millions or billions of dollars exists in Canada, but the legal structures are different, so the censorious impulse is expressed differently.

No doubt you are aware of the sensational cases of Jordan Peterson and Mark Steyn being tried in Star Chambers for badthink, but it's not just well-known and resource-rich people who are subjected to speech trials. It is an ordinary fact of life for people who become troublesome to the regime.

People like Barry Neufeld:

The B.C. Human Rights Tribunal has ordered former Chilliwack school trustee Barry Neufeld to pay $750,000 for violating the Human Rights Code by publishing hate speech and discriminatory content against 2SLGBTQ+ people.

"Mr. Neufeld invoked negative and insidious stereotypes about LGBTQ people, especially trans people, which denied their inherent dignity and, in some cases, reflected the hallmarks of hate against them as a group," the tribunal said in a decision Wednesday.

Neufeld was one of the "loudest critics" against the B.C. government's move in 2017 directing school boards to update codes of conduct to address bullying based on "SOGI," or sexual orientation and gender identity, according to the tribunal’s decision.

"For five years, he publicly denigrated LGBTQ people and teachers and associated them with the worst forms of child abuse," said the tribunal members, adding that the effect was a discriminatory work environment for 2SLGBTQ+ teachers in the district.

How dare he? He opposed a measure that would make it illegal to criticize trans people, and that would force everybody to get in line with transing children

Neufeld’s public campaign began in October 2017 with a Facebook post describing SOGI 1 2 3 (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity resources) as a “weapon of propaganda” and calling gender identity a “biologically absurd theory.” He wrote that “allowing children to choose their gender is nothing short of child abuse,” and linked to an article about prohibiting educational materials “based on gender theory or gender ideology.”

Two days later, he issued a public apology stating, “I am critical of an educational resource, not individuals,” and affirming that he believed in “a safe learning environment for all of our students.”

It really is shocking that anybody could be so cruel. He clearly was inciting hatred and leading peasants with pitchforks to slaughter trans people. That is what the BC Human Rights Council says.

Throughout those statements, the Tribunal said, Neufeld advanced two core themes: that separating gender identity from biological sex is a fiction or “ideology,” and that teaching children about sexual orientation and gender identity harms them and “primes them for abuse.” He repeatedly described “gender ideology” as a “dangerous ideology,” a “fad” and a “lie” that “gaslights” children.

In his closing submissions, Neufeld argued that beliefs about gender identity independent of biological sex “are just that: beliefs. They are not hard, concrete, observable facts such as water is wet and fire is hot.” He compared what he called “gender ideology” to religious belief systems.

The Tribunal in Chilliwack Teachers’ Association v. Neufeld (No. 10) rejected that framing, stating that denying the existence of transgender people constitutes “existential denial.” It wrote: “If a person elects not to ‘believe’ that gender identity is separate from sex assigned at birth, then they do not ‘believe’ in transpeople.”

The decision added: “People can and do live beyond the binary. People can and do decide that they were assigned the incorrect gender at birth. Trans people are here, existing in schools and homes and workplaces.”

Ah, yes. It is genocide to say that there are only two sexes.

So pay up, Mr. Neufeld. And make sure those teachers get some of that nice cash of yours.

As I wrote earlier today, the fight over gender ideology is far from over. All that has happened so far is that gender critical people have won some skirmishes in a war that has a long, long way to go.

The left still has a lot of tools in its toolbox, and has levers of power still at its disposal that they are very willing to deploy to destroy their opponents. Things will likely get much worse, politically and in terms of actual violence, before things get better. Any place where the left has substantial power will keep imposing radical policies, and all legal and extralegal means to fight back will be deployed.

Trans ideology is a significant weapon in the left's insurgent ideology, and trans people have been weaponized.

That's why I have not joined the "We won!" chorus. We haven't...yet.
