New York Times On the Liberal Plan to Save Democracy

There is no better way to save democracy than to kill it.

Last week, I wrote about a New York Times opinion piece decrying the fact that the military won't stage a coup to save democracy. This week, I get to write about the Times' featuring a New Republic editor who wants to chuck the Constitution and replace it with one that guarantees that the left always wins elections, court cases, and every political battle in America.

You have to destroy the village in order to save it, right?

Many of my friends think I am using hyperbole or engaging in wild conspiracy theories when I call the left totalitarian. But the truth is that the left is totalitarian, and they have been plotting to reach this point of total control for decades.

Now, as I often say, I believe that there is a distinction between "liberals"--with whom I have policy disagreements, but to whom I bear no animus--and the left. Liberals and American "conservatives," who are actually a different flavor of liberals in the traditional sense--don't fundamentally disagree about the general contours of society. In general, liberals of the old sort and conservatives occupy the political space between the 30 or 40-yard lines.

The left, though — which has taken over the Democratic Party in recent decades — is revolutionary in nature. The goal is not to perfect our society and social order, but to overturn it. When they speak of Democracy, they are not referring to a political system, but an outcome they deem to be morally correct. Their political model in the French Revolution, and the means they have chosen to conduct their revolution, is called "The Long March Through the Institutions"--named after Mao's Long March.

Gramsci, the political philosopher who coined this phrase, was introduced to America by none other than Pete Buttigieg's father, and Mayor Pothole is the perfect avatar of the movement--a radical leftist dressed up as a moderate technocrat. He wears geekiness as a skin suit.

Obama was the first president brought to us by this movement, and Joe Biden has been, ironically, so far been its apotheosis. He ran as a president dedicated to bringing back normality, and then opened the floodgates to radicalism never before seen in America. He made Wilson and FDR look like conservatives.

When Obama said his goal was to "fundamentally transform" America, liberals heard that he wanted America to be a kinder, gentler place. But Obama, whose mentors were, literally, terrorists--launched his political career at the home of Bill Ayers, and he meant exactly what he said--his goal was the remake America into something entirely different. Into a country in which the President could conspire with the FBI, the CIA, and the Justice Department to destroy the opposition.

The version of totalitarians the left is trying to implement is of a softer variety than the Soviet Union, but using modern technology it is just as oppressive. A social credit system, combined with lawfare and the abuse of the administrative state, were to substitute for the more brutal secret police in the Soviet Union. But the goal is the same.

We saw the rise of censorship, lawfare, attempts to ban Trump from the ballot in many states, and FBI raids on the president and his allies. Obama's IRS famously discriminated against conservative groups--remember Lois Lerner?--and his administration bugged Fox News reporter James Rosen and hacked Sheryl Attkisson's computer.

Now we are seeing the next step on this path: liberals openly musing about military coups conducted by their favorite generals, tossing out the Constitution, and packing the Supreme Court. And these are not academics writing in obscure journals, but former National Security Council staffers for Obama writing in The New York Times.

The Times is now featuring writers whose goal is--explicitly--to remake America in the left's image. Zohran Mamdani is set to be the next Mayor of New York City, and AOC may soon replace Chuck Schumer in the Senate. Governors around the country are pushing the most radical policies with applause from the left, and leftists are literally attacking federal agents trying to deport criminal illegal aliens. Judges are harboring fugitives from the law, and the Democrats are working mightily to preserve voter rolls that are known to be filled with illegal voters and dead people.

What is striking is that liberals don't see the peril we are in. Revolutions are, when push come to shove, just as harsh on their fellow travelers as they are on the opposition. Leon Trotsky got his icepick, and Mao's Cultural Revolution wiped away anybody who deviated the least bit from Maoism.

But all it takes is for liberals to remain credulous is a byline in the New York Times, a credential from a prestigious institution, or a cushy position at an NGO to make a radical appear moderate to them.

The titanic struggle between MAGA and the transnational elite is a battle over control of the institutions. Will America remain what it has been, or will we be "fundamentally transformed" into a American-flavored EU run by technocrats who are rushing headlong into communism?
