Sunday Smiles

MEME

All this week, I have been battling the CRUD.

I haven't had a cold in a few years, which is either miraculous or indicates that I don't get out much.

Which is more likely? David the angel protected by God or David the hermit?

As you can guess, I have not been especially worried that my cold is caused by some variation or another of COVID-19. It has never occurred to me to test for it because...it doesn't matter. It is a viral infection limited to the upper respiratory tract, causing the same discomfort and irritation as any cold, and will eventually go away on its own.

If it doesn't--as happens with any variation of the cold virus this can happen--I will go to the doctor. This is what they call life.

It really amazes me that people outside high-risk categories freaked out so much about COVID. Sure, if you are in bad health or very old (often the same thing), your risk is high, and precautions should be taken, but that isn't much different than what your behavior should be during flu season.

I say this as something of a hypochondriac. But for some reason, bacteria and viruses don't freak me out much because they are such a normal part of life, unlike, say, cancer.

It is a testament to the power of brainwashing that everybody freaked out, including most doctors. Fearmongering and constant repetition are much more powerful forces than we generally appreciate. People in positions of power and influence can create alternate realities, and most people buy into them.

It's a disturbing phenomenon--one that I was always a bit aware of and thought of as the result of weak-mindedness.

It isn't. In fact, some of the people most susceptible to brainwashing were the intellectuals and the midwits--people who are not stupid but are educated enough to have given up common sense. They are not the only ones susceptible to brainwashing, but they appear to be the people most fanatically attached to an intellectual construct divorced from our day-to-day experiences and the lessons we learn from them.

Others have thought more deeply about this than I. But this phenomenon seems to be the key to understanding so much of what has been happening in recent years. I never realized just how common and easy to induce mass psychoses were until I saw the phenomenon up close and personal. Now it seems I see it everywhere.

Time to read up on this, I think. Any suggestions for good books on the topic? I am going to start with Douglas Murray, but I would love suggestions for other books that could help me get my mind around this in a more coherent way.
