The Silence of the Trumps

I've been joking that Joe Biden has managed the impossible: make Donald Trump the least interesting person in the (metaphorical) room.

It's not because Trump is any less interesting than normal--he has kept his schedule going and appealing to his base. But what he hasn't done is to step on the "Joe Biden is senile and Democrats are freaking out" story.

He hasn't even inserted himself into the discussion. He's let the Democrats and the country focus on Joe Biden's and the Democrats' problems. And, as much as the Democrats try to change the subject back to Donald Trump, nobody cares.

Donald Trump is not being interesting, and that is absolutely brilliant. Genius, even.

For all his virtues as a candidate--his humor, his ability to keep people riveted, and his P.T. Barnum-level sales ability--he has never known when to shut up.

Until now.

Trump has exercised a kind of discipline that few, if any, people thought he could.

Honestly, now: did you ever expect that Trump would ever surrender the spotlight to anyone else? To JOE F'ING BIDEN?

Never in a million years would I have thought it possible. Yet here we are. Trump clearly has a strategy to surrender the stage to the Democrats because the Democrats are destroying themselves before the country's eyes.

Frank Fleming, who I have followed now for 2 decades because he can be extremely funny, hit the nail on the head:

Trump's campaign has put out some snippets of others taking shots at Biden and the weak defenses being provided for the president's disastrous debate performance, but they have been amazingly low-key.

Trump. Low-key.

In the SAME SENTENCE. Who would have thought that possible?

If nothing else, this shows that Donald J. Trump has the capacity to learn. He has always had a killer instinct, but his usual tool for killing is to charge like a bull, not tiptoe like a ninja.

We are seeing Ninja Trump. Wow.
