Sunday Smiles

Life in the 2020s too often resembles the Babylon Bee, and usually, we can get a good chuckle out of the parallels.

Sometimes, though, it's hard not to suppress more than a little disgust or even anger when reality and satire merge.

That was the case when I saw this POLITICO headline. It was so absurd, so deceptive, and so large a pile of bovine excrement that I didn't just roll my eyes, but got momentarily angry.

Some of my anger was driven by the sheer contempt the writers had for their audience, and some because undoubtedly more than a few Democrats and NeverTrumpers will pretend that they believe this pile of crap.

Reluctant? Nobody believes that, although more than a few people are arguing that Bragg didn't actually run on a platform of prosecuting Trump (The New York Times profiled him and his main opponent in the race, telling us that they were competing to prove how much more effective they would be in getting Trump, so...yeah, right). Literally everybody knows that this prosecution was concocted, even bespoke, to convict Trump. Even CNN and MSNBC at times admitted that, and CNN's legal analyst wrote as much for New York Magazine after the conviction.

Admittedly, almost every piece in the mainstream media contained either an overtone or at least an undertone of glee over the verdict, but every person celebrating knows that they are basking in the glow of victory, not justice done. They are, as a class, utterly indifferent to the truth. They have one goal, and it is the destruction of Trump and his supporters. Throw in a pro-lifer or three for good measure.

They can say anything they want aloud, but we and they all know that they weaponized the justice system. Many of them believe that it was the right thing to do because Orange Man Bad, but they KNOW they concocted this crime in just the manner they concocted the Steele Dossier. It was a hoax. A fraud. A desperate bid to save America from Americans they despise.

It's a class thing, not a justice one. Ask Hunter Biden about that. Well, if you could ask him, but he is being protected by a sugar daddy who has been protect from having to talk about why he has thrown millions of dollars at Hunter.

I wonder why.

Orwell, in writing about the Spanish Civil War, captured this phenomenon:

for the first time, I saw newspaper reports which did not bear any relation to the facts, not even the relationship which is implied in an ordinary lie. I saw great battles reported where there had been no fighting, and complete silence where hundreds of men had been killed. I saw troops who had fought bravely denounced as cowards and traitors, and others who had never seen a shot fired hailed as the heroes of imaginary victories, and I saw newspapers in London retailing these lies and eager intellectuals building emotional superstructures over events that had never happened. I saw, in fact, history being written not in terms of what happened but of what ought to have happened according to various β€˜party lines’.

I have always disliked Trump as a man. I grew up in a class that looked down on people like him, and I still harbor prejudices against the boisterous boaster types of whom he is the best example. I am still genteel enough to hate his mean tweets and random insults against bad people and also good ones.

He can be disgraceful. But then again, so have many people who turn out to be heroes. Patton could be disgraceful. In the Bible, King David was a great sinner. Constantine was not a nice man. Countless Westerns feature hard men of questionable character saving the townspeople from other evil people. Clint Eastwood is almost always the hard man who does the necessary things. Douglas MacArthur was perhaps the most Trump-like--a boastful man with an outrageous ego and also a hell of a general.

Trump, it turns out, is of this mold. And the necessary thing he must do is to clean up Washington, D.C.

It's no secret that the Establishment sees this as a fight to the (at least metaphorical) death, and they have become the powerful outlaws who have seized the town and terrorized the citizens.

The outlaws who did these things often were shown looking exactly like this:

That is the smirk of a man who knows that he can get away with anything.

Many of my readers are not at all bothered by Trump's character, and that is fine, and I understand. And many of you are bothered, to which I say, "Get over it." There is no alternative hero to come save the townspeople. You and I may wish there were a Paladin who could take on the role that our reformed gunslinger has, but there isn't. It is Clint Eastwood vs. the demented tyrannical outlaws. You choose.

I know who I choose, and it's not the psychopaths running and ruining our country.
