Most people are unaware, for instance, that the UNRWA is the only agency of the UN that is solely focused on supporting one and only one group of “refugees” (I use quotation marks because calling people who have lived for generations in a place are not refugees, but residents of that place). Using the term refugee for a “Palestinian” in Gaza or the West Bank makes as much sense as calling a third-generation American a “refugee.”

Among all peoples in the world affected by conflict and displacement, only the Palestinians have a dedicated UN agency to assist their so-called refugees, i.e., those displaced in the 1948 war launched by the Arab states against Israel when it declared independence, as well as their descendants.

The Israelis have been warning people forever about the UNRWA, and President Trump cut off US support during his term; in one of a million stupid reversals of Trump’s policies, Biden reinstated the aid.

After proving that a bunch of UNRWA employees actually participated in the October 7th terrorist attacks some countries have cut off support–temporarily–but even that cutoff isn’t exactly what it seems. The US, for instance, claims to have cut off support but is fulfilling prior commitments into the future, so the cut of aid is purely notional. The money is still flowing. Well today UN Watch dropped a report about UNRWA employees’ secret Telegram chat room where even more terrorist supporters blabbed about their support for Hamas and their terror attacks.

I follow UN Watch’s work because, well, nobody in the MSM will talk about the failings of that disgusting institution. UN Watch does the work because somebody has to.

The report is disturbing, if unsurprising.

Notwithstanding the repeated denials by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and its insistence that it has zero tolerance for hatred and antisemitism, UN Watch continues to find abhorrent antisemitism and support for jihadi terrorism by UNRWA staff on social media. This report details how UNRWA teachers in a 3,000-member UNRWA staff Telegram group cheered and celebrated Hamas’s October 7th massacre while at the same time asking when their UNRWA salaries will be paid. The UNRWA staff in the group shared photos and video footage of those events and prayed for the terrorists’ success and for Israel’s destruction, in clear violation of UN rules.

This is the latest in a series of reports on UNRWA staff antisemitism and incitement to jihadi terrorism which our research proves is systemic and widespread. Since 2015, UN Watch has exposed over 150 UNRWA staff Facebook pages that contain antisemitism and incitement to jihadi terrorism in blatant violation of UN neutrality. UNRWA’s typical response to our research has been to disparage our human rights organization and downplay the problem as reflecting just a few bad apples. The UNRWA Telegram group featured in this report completely eviscerates UNRWA’s denials and exposes the extent of UNRWA’s failure to do the bare minimum to address its staff’s neutrality violations.

There is absolutely no way that the UN could be unaware of what is going on in this group, or for that matter any intelligence agency. A group like this is not really secret when there are 3000 members, and no major government that does business with the UNRWA could possibly be ignorant of the widespread support for terrorism in the ranks of the organization or, specifically, the fact that many of the “educators” employed by the UNRWA are teaching hate to the next generation of children.

For all the talk about Israel creating a new generation of terrorists by fighting Hamas, the real problem is that the United Nations itself is actually teaching hatred for Jews and, in many cases, how to commit acts of terror.

The UNRWA exists only at the sufferance of the Western powers, because that is where the money comes from. The US and Germany have been the biggest donors and, hence, are among the largest supporters of terrorism against Israel.

UNRWA is funded by hundreds of millions of dollars of state donations. Although final donor numbers for 2023 have not yet been published, in 2022 UNRWA received $344 million from the United States, $202 million from Germany, $114 million from the European Commission, $61 million from Sweden, $34 million from Norway, $29 million from France, $25 million from Switzerland, $24 million from Canada, $21 million from the UK, and $21 million from the Netherlands.

The Western governments do this because they hope that at least some of this money will go to people in need, and frankly, as a payoff to Hamas and the Palestinian Authority to refrain from terrorism.

It hasn’t worked, just as Biden’s flood of money to Iran has not prevented it from attacking Americans through proxies. You cannot buy off determined enemies; they use your money to fund their evil acts.

In practice, UNRWA is a political advocacy tool to promote the so-called Palestinian right of return, which is just another way for the Palestinians to achieve their ultimate goal of eliminating Israel as a Jewish state. Last March, the UNRWA Teachers’ Union in Lebanon described UNRWA as “the main political witness to our cause,” i.e., to the plight of the refugees and their right of return.18 Therefore, it is not surprising that UNRWA has close ties to the Palestinian leadership, as indicated by the fact that the PLO-affiliated Palestine Refugee Advocacy Network was involved in creating and managing the UNRWA Telegram group at issue here. At the same time, because it is part of the UN, UNRWA is mandated to abide by the UN humanitarian principles. Therefore, on its website, UNRWA pays lip service to these principles. However, our research since 2015 proves that UNRWA’s representations are at best highly misleading and at worst outright lies.

The only reason the UNRWA even exists is to implicitly promote the “right of return,” which in practice means to eliminate Israel as a state. There is no other agency remotely similar to the UNRWA, and no other group is classified as refugees 75 years after an event like this. Israel is a state recognized by the United Nations for over 75 years. It is not going away. One-fifth of the country’s population is Arab, who have full voting rights and are represented in the government. So-called “Palestinians” are “refugees” by choice, and the UN should quit promoting the idea that they are somehow “occupied” and oppressed by Israel.

Israel is at war with Hamas because Hamas went to war with Israel. There was a cease-fire, and Hamas broke it. The fact that the UN is implicitly siding with the aggressor, which violated international law, is appalling enough. That its employees are cheering on rapists and murderers while being paid by the US and other Western countries is horrifying.

The UNRWA should cease to exist. Period. It has been funding terrorism and employing terrorists.

Time for it to go.
