Good riddance

Mayor Lori Lightfoot of Chicago got the boot yesterday.

Jazz just wrote about it, and you should definitely read his post. But I just have to chime in because, frankly, Jazz failed to dance on her grave.

Me? I’ll do the Jig, the Lindy Hop, the Charleston, the Jitterbug, the Cha-Cha, the Twist, the Monster Mash…

Maybe I’ll do a TikTok of a fat man doing the Limbo, just for Lori. I know just the fat man.

Good riddance, Lori Lightfoot. I wish I could say “we hardly knew you,” but the truth is that we knew her all too well.

I’m tempted to say it is a good sign that Lightfoot got the boot, but it is far too soon to tell. Lightfoot was a particularly toxic figure in American politics, and American politics has been specializing in toxicity of late.

Black, lesbian, and clearly a person of limited intelligence, Lightfoot was only elected because she was Black, lesbian, and clearly of limited intellectual abilities. She was elected as a symbol, not a Mayor. As if running one of America’s premier cities was merely a matter of being an empty vessel with some shallow characteristics painted on.

I would say she was an empty suit, but empty suits don’t consistently make damaging decisions. Lori Lightfoot made quite a few.

Spikes in crime likely did Lightfoot in, which I suppose is a good sign. Except that literally every single person who voted for Lightfoot last time around knew that she was utterly unqualified for the job, and they voted for her anyway.

WTF did they expect? I would say they got what they deserved, but that would be churlish.

Instead, I will say they got what they voted for, and their regrets should be accompanied by choruses of “I told you so!”

I told you so.

I told you so.

I told you so, dumb@ss!

Chicago isn’t South Bend, which can afford to elect somebody as shallow as Mayor Pete. As much as the locals have a right to elect whomever they want, they also have a responsibility that stems from the fact that they are one of the most important cities in the world.

Chicago hosts 35 Fortune 500 headquarters–the second most in the US. But that is deceptive, as the city has been bleeding them due to the collapse of civil society in the city. Last year 3 headquarters left the city–almost 10%. In one year.

IN ONE YEAR.

Lightfoot of course is convinced that she was booted due to racism, sexism, heteronormativity, and an irrational fear of people who look like Beetlejuice. Which makes sense, since those were the reasons she was never elected Mayor in the first place, right? That glass ceiling…oh, wait, she WAS elected despite being Black, lesbian, and looking like Beetlejuice the last time she ran.

As I said, she is intellectually challenged. Although come to think of it, a million other people will point to those same factors as the explanation for her loss.

I like to photograph architecture, and Chicago is a perfect place to do so. The last time I wanted to visit, my wife refused to let me walk the streets due to crime, and she had a point. Walking around, even in the heart of the city, with a few thousand dollars of camera gear would have been idiotic.

So I took a boat tour of the city, which was fun. But really, should walking the Miracle Mile in broad daylight be a worry? Under Mayor Lightfoot it was.

Many people are expressing hope that Lightfoot’s loss proves that the identity politics fever is breaking, but I will believe it when I see it.

The two top vote-getters are the most conservative candidate, and the most progressive. That happened in the LA Mayor’s election, and even celebrities were voting for the almost-Right-winger to deal with crime.

He lost. To a progressive. Karen Bass beat Rick Caruso by 10 points, proving that stupid is as stupid does. I fear we will see the same in Chicago.

Paul Vallas, the “conservative” in the race, won the largest number of votes in a crowded field. His opponent in the runoff, Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson, is running far behind.

Except–Vallas got only 35%, with the other 65% going to a split field of lefty candidates. And Vallas is no conservative–he used to run the public schools in Chicago. But at least he opposes crime, which is a rarity in modern Left politics.

It’s hard to be optimistic, given that 82% of Chicagoans voted for the decrepit Joe Biden, actually believing that he was sentient and competent.

Remember–Vallas ran the public schools that educated those people who thought Joe Biden would be a good president.

Lord help us.

UPDATE: CORRECTED an idiotic mistake of misnaming Vallas.
