We're in Day 4 of "I'm Outraged at Shane Gillis for a Monologue Joke He Told on 'Saturday Night Live.'"
And there's no sign of it slowing down.
Gillis, hosting "SNL" for the third time after NBC fired him for old, offensive jokes, set up a comic scenario about the way women dress in public gyms during Saturday's show. He poked fun at his own chubby frame before sharing what he saw when he finally hit the gym.
I haven't been to the gym in so long. I didn't know that women just dress like whores now.
The fainting couches have never been more full ... of you-know-what.
The mildly provocative line took on a life of its own, partially because the Left assumes Gillis is a MAGA-friendly Republican. He's not. He recently pined for free health care for all, and some of his Trump material is top-notch, funny and cutting.
He once did a bit saying if President Trump got shot, his reaction would be funny. Worst MAGA ever, no?
That isn't why we shouldn't give his critics any credence. It's the lack of outrage elsewhere that tells the larger story. Consider White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia. The new Trump hire had by most accounts a rough debut as the official spokeswoman. That's certainly fodder for a talk show like "The View."
The far-left hosts took it one step further. Alyssa Farah Griffin asked how Zacharia got this far in the administration.
“I can tell you how she got through the door!” Sarah Haines shouted, with the crowd and her fellow hosts snorting in reaction. The show turned the comment into an extended bit suggesting Zacharia slept her way into the gig.
Sexist much?
In recent days, TV show producer Chuck Lorre lashed out at all things Trump during an awards ceremony that had nothing to do with politics. Lorre, the mastermind behind "The Big Bang Theory," went there anyway.
Fine.
What Lorre said during his speech wasn't remotely fine, at least by the Left's woke standards. He referred to First Lady Melania Trump as "a surgically enhanced, coldhearted Yugoslavian escort who clearly hates her husband."
Sexist much? Now, how much outrage from the Left did that inspire? You couldn't find any with a microscope. Then again, Melania Trump is routinely mocked above and beyond what we expect a first lady should receive.
Several years ago, the far-Left Jimmy Kimmel invited Sacha Baron Cohen on his show. The two tag-teamed to sexualize Ms. Trump, something that would never happen to, say, Michelle Obama.
And what about Dan Levy? He helped fuel the outrage cycle earlier this week by slamming Gillis' monologue as Misogyny 101. Yet his "Schitt's Creek" character once described tacky women's clothing as "skanky."
Chilling, no? Actually, no.
This may seem like a silly debate in general. It's not. The woke mob came for comedy over the past decade, and it succeeded in all but destroying R-rated romps akin to "Wedding Crashers" and "Old School." We haven't howled in theaters in ages, no thanks to the woke scolds.
Gillis was personally canceled for crude Asian jokes, losing an alleged dream gig with "SNL." He recovered and became a superstar. Will he be canceled anew?
Maybe. Just know the current outrage is as authentic as Lee Press-On Nails.
