Top Iranian cleric: Wear a headscarf or die

On Monday I posted a debate between Megyn Kelly and CAIR’s Ahmed Rehab, the latter arguing that “honor killings” are un-Islamic. He said that en route to condemning the murder of 16-year-old Aqsa Parvez, reportedly killed by her father for refusing to wear a headscarf. Rehab expressed shock that anyone would think killing anyone over wearing a headscarf was part of Islamic thinking.

Mr. Rehab needs to have a word with Hojatolislam Gholam Reza Hassani. Or perhaps Hassani needs to have a word with Mr. Rehab.

Tehran, 19 Dec. (AKI) – A top Muslim cleric in Iran, Hojatolislam Gholam Reza Hassani said on Wednesday that women in Iran who do not wear the hijab or Muslim headscarf, should die.

“Women who do not respect the hijab and their husbands deserve to die,” said Hassani, who leads Friday prayers in the city of Urumieh, in Iranian Azerbaijan.

“I do not understand how these women who do not respect the hijab, 28 years after the birth of the Islamic Republic, are still alive,” he said.

“These women and their husbands and their fathers must die,” said Hassani, who is the representative of the Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in eastern Azerbaijan.

The cleric even decries “skimpy headscarves” on his way to linking the Iranian Islamic Revolution to the “honor killing” custom that Mr. Rehab seems to have found so strange.
