Video: Garry Kasparov on Putin, Russia's economy and his own safety

In September Russian chess master Garry Kasparov announced that he would run for president against Vladimir Putin. Ironically and tellingly, Kasparov’s best means of getting his message across to Russian voters is evidently to appear on US TV and in American and European publications. In this interview on CNN’s Late Edition, Kasparov talks about why he’s running for the Russian presidency and what his chance of winning are, about Putin’s becoming both a billionaire while in office and becoming Russia’s “spiritual leader” after leaving office, and about Kasparov’s own security in light of his open opposition to the Putin regime. The interview has been edited for brevity.
