Rep. Eric Swalwell has topped himself. Just when we thought he couldn’t get any more nonsensical on social media, he did. The fallout was swift and brutal.
The first of the Democrat debates are rapidly approaching. There are so many Democrat candidates running for the nomination that two consecutive nights are reserved for the first and second debates. NBC, MSNBC, and Telemundo will broadcast the debates on June 26 and 27 in Miami. CNN is scheduled to host the second two nights of debates in Detroit on July 30 and 31. Most of the field of candidates have met the criteria put in place by the DNC but a few have only met one major qualification.
To qualify for the first two debates, candidates have to fulfill one of two criteria: either get 65,000 donors to their campaigns, with at least 200 donors in 20 different states, or obtain at least 1 percent in three polls recognized as legitimate by the committee. If more than 20 candidates qualify for the debate, the DNC has said it will choose participants with “a methodology that gives primacy to candidates meeting both thresholds, followed by the highest polling average, followed by the most unique donors.”
Eric Swalwell is one of the candidates who has met the polling qualification but not the donor qualification. Others who have met only one of the criteria include Amy Klobuchar, John Delaney, Jay Inslee, John Hickenlooper, Kirsten Gillibrand, Tim Ryan, and Bill de Blasio. Sunday Swalwell tweeted a fundraising appeal and it was eleven seconds of cringeworthy desperation.
Three hours later he used his baby daughter again, this time it was an appeal for viewership of his town hall on CNN later Sunday night as he talked about separating mothers and their children at the border. The baby is adorable, by the way, but good heavens. It comes off as creepy and exploitive.
How will we fix our immigration system?

The diaper-changing tweet deserved every mocking comment it received. Does changing a diaper qualify Swalwell to be President of the United States? Of course not. “If Eric can clean s#*% up at home… he can clean it up in Washington.” Really? It’s just a dumb video and another bone-headed attempt for support. Maybe he was bored on a Sunday afternoon as he waited to go to the town hall.
Remember when he tweeted his outrage that the word “Woman” isn’t mentioned in the Constitution? How about when he defiantly passed up getting a coffee in Trump Tower? And don’t forget when he threatened gun-owners with nukes. He also displayed a pride flag on the door of his congressional office and said it is there every day, except the flag was still clearly creased from being in its packaging. Let’s face it, the man has really poor instincts when it comes to getting a message out by using social media. He comes off as not the brightest bulb, that’s for sure.
I changed a bazillion diapers when my son wore them yet I never once connected that basic act of caregiving with a potential presidential run. Silly me. I could have begged folks for a buck and launched a campaign myself.
