Obama on the campaign trail, bashes GOP and Trump

Irony is dead, y’all. 2018 has brought about some interesting times on the campaign trail leading up to the mid-term elections but how rich is it to hear former President Barack Obama declare that President Trump and the GOP are just lying liars? You may remember that this is the same man who was award the distinction of saying the Lie of the Year in 2013 for his whopper about the overtaking of our nation’s health insurance.  “If you like your health-care plan, you can keep it.”

Yeah. That one was a beaut. When Obama was in the White House, as the head of the Democratic Party, he oversaw historically devastating losses in mid-term elections. Everything from state elections to Congressional elections was lost by Democrats running for office. The dirty little secret about Barack Obama is that he is all about Barack and not so much about his party. He never bothered to get out there and campaign for his party’s candidates.

Now, breaking a decades-long tradition of former presidents fading into the background during campaign seasons, Obama is out on the trail all wee-weed up about Republicans and the current president. Obama isn’t bold enough to actually say his name but clearly, President Trump is living rent-free in Obama’s head. This week Obama traveled to both Wisconsin and Michigan to tell his loyal supporters that Republicans lie and everyone is going to die from health care being unavailable, or something. He went on a rant against Governor Scott Walker in Wisconsin.

In his most animated speech on the campaign trail this year, he accused Gov. Scott Walker and other Republicans of lying about their health care record and their claims that they’ll support protections for those who have pre-existing medical conditions.

Obama said there has always been spin in politics, but “what we have not seen before in our recent public life is politicians just blatantly, repeatedly, baldly, shamelessly lying, making stuff up. Calling up down, calling black white.”

Obama said of Walker’s recent ad defending his record on pre-existing conditions: “Your governor has been running an ad during election time saying he is going to protect pre-existing conditions when he is literally doing the opposite. That is some kind of gall. That is some kind of chutzpah. But let’s also call it what it is. It is a lie.”

Naturally, this was too easy and Gov. Walker responded.

It’s good to see Republicans in the fight, isn’t it? I think that may be the biggest benefit of Trump’s presidency, besides the good policy victories – he has provided extra steel in the spines of Republican politicians to stand up and push back on all the Democrat tropes. This is something the electorate has been begging for all along. Voters want Republicans to stand up and speak up.

Speaking of chutzpah and gall, he went on to say that no one in his administration got indicted. Ah, yes. The good old days of Team Obama listening in to private phone conversations of reporters and threatening them with jail. Remember, too, the days of weaponizing the IRS against political opponents, like members of the Tea Party, and labeling the political opposition as unpatriotic. Any disagreements with Obama policies were just dismissed as racist. And, don’t forget the lies and cover-up when an American ambassador was killed in Libya while Americans trying to protect him were left to fend for themselves in a 13 hour long battle against rioting insurgents.

Obama went on to Michigan. He spoke of hope and change while declaring a “great awakening”.

“I’m hopeful, Michigan,” Obama told the crowd in a 5,000-seat gymnasium. “I’m hopeful that despite all the noise, despite all the lies, we’re going to come through all that. We’re going to remember who we are, who we’re called to be. I’m hopeful because out of this political darkness, I’m seeing a great awakening.”

I seem to remember a great awakening called the Tea Party during his first term. That awakening brought about the huge GOP victories yet now we see the fabled blue wave diminishing into a ripple, perhaps. Republicans will keep the Senate and if the Democrats take back the House, which I am more and more convinced may not happen, it will be by a small margin. That’s my prediction, anyway. I just don’t see any huge upset happening, at least against Republicans. I think the upsets are entirely possible against Democrat incumbents.

Let’s be real. Obama is out on the campaign trail, acting in a less than becoming manner for a former president because President Trump has been so successful in eliminating any hope for a true Obama legacy. He’s out there in full campaign mode cadence, dropping his g’s and going off script. It’s personal for him because it’s always all about him.

President Obama was the most divisive president in my lifetime. His presidency was a very long eight-year slog for most of us. I found his rhetoric of don’t bring a knife to a gunfight and the like as over the top as he claims today’s rhetoric sounds. Spare me the indignation from the left about incivility now. The eight years of Obama’s presidency brought about President Trump.
