Beto O'Rourke supporter: "You're Luke Skywalker"

We are now 22 days out from Election Day, November 6, 2018, and things are getting a little weird. As the socialist left continues to embrace Beto O’Rourke and lionize him into a Kennedyesque fairy tale character, guess who came to Texas to campaign with Beto? A Kennedy! How on the nose can you get, I ask?

Remember Rep. Joe Kennedy III, the pasty, sweaty-faced young Kennedy who delivered the Democrat response to President Trump’s State of the Union address? Yeah, that one. He came to Texas and brought his wife along, too. The two of them teamed up with Beto and his wife to do some rallies along the Texas border from Corpus Christi to Harlingen. Here’s the kicker – Kennedy drove the foursome from campaign stop to campaign stop. When was the last time you heard of a Kennedy being the designated driver?

During an event in McAllen – a large event for O’Rourke as 1500 people showed up – a supporter presented him with a lightsaber and gushed, “You’re part of the rebellion and we’re going against the empire. You’re Luke Skywalker, my friend, so keep it up.” Ok, then. He also handed the candidate a bag of pan dulce (Mexican pastries) to give to Kennedy. How sweet.

Perhaps the young Kennedy, age 37, brought out a more juvenile side of O’Rourke, age 46. O’Rourke skateboarded onto the stage in Corpus Christi. Seriously. Nothing says serious thinker like riding a skateboard for an audience, right? The event was on the campus of Del Mar College so I guess he was just trying to fit in. You may remember not long ago O’Rourke’s campaign filmed him on a skateboard in a Whataburger parking lot. Looks like this is his schtick.

Friday, Senator Cruz was campaigning in Houston and cracked a joke about the Democrat duo. Needless to say, Beto wasn’t amused.

“By the way, he had Joe Kennedy down here campaigning with him,” Cruz said at the Houston event. “And Joe Kennedy was driving him around. I have to admit, it may be the first time in history anyone’s ever asked a Kennedy to drive.”

The crowd laughed at the reference to the 1969 incident at Chappaquiddick, where Sen. Ted Kennedy — great uncle to the congressman — crashed a car off a bridge. The passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne, was killed.

“I think that just says everything you need to know about Sen. Cruz,” O’Rourke said before the rally, noting Cruz’s comment was the “smallest of the small.”

Poor Beto. He’s down by 9 points in the race and he seems to be getting a bit frazzled.

The main issue discussed by O’Rourke to the audiences along the border was as you would expect – immigration and the border. The students were enthusiastic about the candidate’s far left views against a border wall and in favor of embracing illegal immigrants. Some of his concerns about a wall have already been addressed by President Trump.

“A nation of walls, 2,000 miles long, 30-feet high and a cost of $30 billion,” O’Rourke said to applause. “And as you know, those walls, they won’t be built on the international boundary between the United States and Mexico, which is the middle of the Rio Grande river channel. It’ll be built through the Santa Ana Wildlife Refuge, it will be built through somebody’s ranch, or farm or home, forcing this country to use its power of eminent domain to take its own citizens’ property to construct a wall that by any measure we do not need.”

Just last week, the Department of Homeland Security issued a waiver to certain laws to ensure “the expeditious construction of barriers and roads near the international border in the state of Texas, in the county of Hidalgo.”

O’Rourke’s rhetoric sounds great for his next run, which I assume will be as someone’s vice-presidential candidate, but it’s not going over very well in Texas. Texas isn’t quite ready to become California, no matter how much money Hollywood liberals send to the guy.

Young Kennedy has visited Texas in past years and campaigned alongside his Uncle Ted “the Swimmer” Kennedy.

“My family feels a very special connection to the Rio Grande Valley,” Kennedy said. “This is an area that my family has campaigned in for a long time.”

O’Rourke went a bit further.

“The border,” O’Rourke said on stage. “It’s effing amazing.”

Well, at least O’Rourke cleaned up his pander to the audience. He’s well-known for dropping the f-word in his campaign stump speeches.

The next debate between Ted Cruz and Beto O’Rourke is scheduled for Tuesday in San Antonio. Then Thursday CNN is giving O’Rourke a full hour in town hall style, though now Cruz has asked to join in on that. I don’t know if a decision has been made.

O’Rourke has not distinguished himself in the House of Representatives. He’s been there since 2013 and only has 3 bills for which to claim the credit on passage. One of them was for naming a federal building. Sure, he can ride a skateboard and jam with a punk rock garage band but I don’t think that is going to be quite enough to convince Texans he’s the guy to send to the Senate this time. He’ll have to save his abundance of speeches promising everything to everyone at the expense of the American taxpayer for future runs.

No Democrat has won a statewide race in Texas since 1996. Beto O’Rourke will not conquer that statistic on November 6, even with a lightsaber.
