Sayfullo Saipov has been charged with “federal crimes of terrorism” after the attack Tuesday in which he drove a truck down a Manhattan bike path, killing 8 people and injuring a dozen more. From the Guardian:

Sayfullo Saipov was taken to the New York federal courthouse in a wheelchair, handcuffed and with his feet shackled on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old was charged with providing material support to a terrorist group and violence and destruction of motor vehicles.

Investigators said Saipov watched Isis videos on his cellphone and picked Halloween for the attack on a bike lane in lower Manhattan because he knew more people would be out on the streets. It was the deadliest terrorist act in New York City since 9/11.

As Allahpundit reported earlier, there’s no mystery about what motivated this goon. He left behind several notes and “bragged” to police about the attack. The Guardian also notes this bit:

According to the filing, as Saipov lay wounded in the hospital, he asked to display the Isis flag in his room and “stated that he felt good about what he had done”, prosecutors said in court papers.

The cocky bastard wants to fly the black flag to celebrate his mass murder as he’s recovering from his injuries! It seems pretty clear from his actions after the attack, i.e. running through the streets with a BB gun and a paintball gun, that Saipov intended to die. I suspect he’ll belatedly get his wish. Boston bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev committed his act of terror in a state which does not allow the death penalty but because he was convicted on federal charges, he has been sentenced to death (in 2015), though it’s expected his appeals could take decades to play out.

Meanwhile, 32-year-old Mukhammadzoir Kadirov, described as a person of interest earlier today, has been located.

Not much information about Kadirov has been released including the reason why authorities consider him a person of interest.
