Hillary Clinton: A lot of other people are to blame for my 2016 election loss

Hillary Clinton gave an interview Thursday during the Women in the World Summit in New York. Segments of the interview which were posted online show Hillary offering an array of outside forces which she blames for her electoral loss last year, from FBI Director Comey’s letter to Russian interference to generalized misogyny.

“You know in any campaign there’s so many different cross-currents and events and some have greater impact than others,” Clinton said in response to a question about misogyny and the fact that a majority of white women voted for her opponent. She continued, “But it is fair to say…certainly, misogyny played a role. I mean that just has to be admitted.”

Pressed on how she would assign blame to various factors in her loss, Clinton replied, “We have spent a lot of time—we the proverbial multitudinous we—both people who worked on the campaign, people who were interested observers and others trying to piece it all together.” “There are things we certainly could have done better, there are things I certainly could have done better,” she said.

Clinton then focused on two outside factors which she said were determinative. “The outside intervention—the combination of the Comey letter on October 28th; Wikileaks, which played a much bigger role than I think many people understand yet—had the determinative effect,” Clinton said. Clinton cited Nate Silver’s analysis of the impact of the Comey letter.

She then returned to the issue of Russia saying, “Since they were successful in influencing voters—that’s different from interference with the actual voting machines and for a while, there was confusion about that.” She continued, “A lot of people said ‘Can you prove that people interfered with the machines?’ That’s something, put that to one side, although, you know, there are people who pursue that, but put that to one side. It was really the weaponization of information.” Clinton added, “It created doubts in people.”

Clinton went on to say the Russian hacking of the DNC, DCCC, etc. was “a more effective theft even than Watergate.”

Clinton also speculated on the reason Russian President Vladimir Putin interfered in the election. “People have asked me ‘Why do you think he did that to you?'” Clinton said. She continued, “I don’t think it’s that complicated. He had his desire to destabilize us and others and, you know, he’s not exactly fond of strong women.”

Perhaps the segment where Clinton focused on her own failures in the race hasn’t been posted yet, but it sounds as if she is saying the important factors in the race were out of her control. Hillary didn’t lose, she was cheated out of a win by Comey, Russia and the patriarchy (or some combination of all three).

Of course, there’s a very good reason people were susceptible to serious doubts about her character. First, there were the blatant lies she offered the public from before she was a candidate until late in the campaign. Then there was the time she spent avoiding questions and the times her subordinates spent pleading the 5th to avoid incriminating themselves. The result is someone who doesn’t appear very trustworthy.

The Comey letter wouldn’t have mattered if it didn’t play into pre-existing concerns many people had about Hillary. For all the weeks she has spent pondering the 2016 loss, she doesn’t seem to have gained much insight on her own role in it.
