It’s been a while since we checked in on Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf. Her fifteen minutes of fame came last winter, though not for the best of reasons. As part of her responsibilities as the city’s chief executive, Schaaf was given a courtesy call from immigration enforcement, informing her that ICE would be conducting some raids and detaining illegal aliens in her city. Rather than coordinating with other law enforcement agencies, Schaaf decided to instead put out a warning to the illegals in her community, letting them know that a raid was coming so they could get off the grid. The subsequent raid wound up failing to locate dozens of criminal illegal aliens.
Having had the better part of a year to reflect on her actions, does Mayor Schaaf still feel that was the right thing to do? In a recent interview, she expressed no regrets at all and still somehow believes she was simply doing the right thing. (Newsweek)
A mayor who warned Northern California residents about an imminent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid said she did not regret her action…
“I have no regrets, none,” Schaff told BuzzFeed in an interview.
“The more time goes by, the more certain I feel that I did the right thing in standing up for our community and pointing out our values are not aligned with our laws.
“That’s hopefully the message that is sent out.”
Schaaf, a Democrat, also criticized the federal immigration agency, suggesting it should be abolished.
Whatever helps you sleep through the night, I suppose. Also worth noting in this sad little saga is the fact that ICE later reported that some of the illegal aliens who slipped through the net thanks to Schaaf’s gang signaling went on to commit more crimes before they were finally apprehended and deported. (How many of them have slipped back into the country and made their way back to her sanctuary city is unknown.)
At this point, the lines have been fairly well drawn in this battle. It’s not as if northern California doesn’t already have enough problems to deal with, but there seems to be no end to the story of illegal aliens who avoid detection – many because of California’s liberal sanctuary policies – and go on to commit murder, including the killing of police officers, and other violent crimes. Gang violence is still a major problem in the Golden State, and the Border Patrol is still finding MS-13 members sneaking in with the migrant caravans and hoping to find safe havens.
The next time Oakland sees that a body is dropped, a woman is raped or some other form of violent crime is attributed to one of these illegal aliens, the family and friends of the victims should keep something in mind. Don’t attempt to lay the blame on the federal government. Don’t blame our immigration policies. Don’t fault your own police for not keeping you safe. Take it up with your mayor. She’s chosen her side in this dispute and it’s not the side of law and order. And keep this story in mind also.
