Every round of mid-term elections brings a host of stories, (more than 400, in fact) many of which we never get to cover. But there’s one shaping up here in Upstate New York which may provide some fun. In the Empire State’s 23rd congressional district, Tom Reed (R-NY) is facing a challenge from Democrat Martha Robertson and she’s quickly being exposed has having a somewhat “colorful” past. (Full disclosure: I have never worked on staff for Congressman Reed, but I did organize a few joint campaign events which he attended in 2010 along with some other candidates and went on a few bus tours. He’s a great guy.)
Ms. Robertson is turning out to be yet another of those political hopefuls who apparently wasn’t aware that we had cameras way back in 2009 and methods of storing the images and sounds they record. As Professor Jacobson reports at Legal Insurrection, Martha was caught on camera just a few years back supporting something different than Obamacare… she was ready to go all in on a national single payer plan.
Robertson also is receiving local media attention for her years-long support for single payer, another story Legal Insurrection broke:
I predicted that Robertson would have trouble with single payers support in the wake of the Obamacare debacle, and sure enough, she’s running away from her past support for single payer.
Sure enough, Jacobson’s prescient hunch came true, as reported in The Buffalo News.
The Democratic candidate who’s challenging Rep. Tom Reed, R-Corning, favored a single-payer health care plan before Congress passed Obamacare, and Reed is making an issue of it.
Days after a YouTube site called “Legal Insurrection” aired a compilation of years-old videos in which Martha Robertson endorsed a health system run entirely by the federal government, Reed on Monday said that’s a stance that should worry voters…
Asked about those comments on Monday, Robertson said she now favors “fixing the Affordable Care Act” rather than replacing it with a single-payer plan.
This should be of interest to conservative observers because Robertson is only one of many Democrats who have had to backpedal from their previous stances on thing like the ongoing Obamacare train wreck. But further, not only is support for Obamacare (and the Democrats who back it) swirling around the bottom of the drain, but backing for any sort of Big Government “solution” to healthcare issues is being dragged down with them.
Here’s the Robertson video from Legal Insurrection, just in case Ms. Robertson is inclined to forget what she said.
Break out the popcorn. NY 23 could be considered a swing district and this race is shaping up to be a good “hold” opportunity for Republicans thanks to the ascendance of Robertson as the Dem’s choice.
