Video: White House staffer on leave after shooting at boyfriend

Barvetta Singletary may have more problems than unpaid leave from her job. Earlier today, NBC’s Washington affiliate reported that Singletary, a White House aide since last year who spent the previous 15 years working for Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC), got charged with domestic violence after an incident and arrest on Friday. She may end up facing assault with a deadly weapon after taking her boyfriend’s gun and firing at least one round in his direction:

A White House staffer has been charged with domestic violence after police say she threatened her boyfriend, a U.S. Capitol Police officer, with his own weapon during an argument.

According to charging documents, Barvetta Singletary sent her boyfriend a text on Friday, asking him to come to her Upper Marlboro home for sex. After they had sex, Singletary confronted her boyfriend about other woman he was dating.

Investigators say Singletary asked her boyfriend to step outside, and they both went to his car. Once inside the car, police say Singletary asked to see her boyfriend’s cellphones. When he refused, Singletary reached into his bag and retrieved two cell phones and the victim’s .40 caliber Glock 23 service weapon, charging documents state.

Singletary then demanded the passwords to the cell phones, presumably to check out his text messages. When he refused, she reminded the police officer that he showed her how to fire the gun, and “don’t think I won’t use it.” Unlike her boss, Singletary allegedly proved to be true to her word, firing one shot in his direction and sending him fleeing out into the street.

Jake Tapper got the first television report on the incident for CNN::

Just who is Barvetta Singletary?

Singletary has served as special assistant to the president and House legislative affairs liaison since 2014. Before that, she was deputy chief of staff and policy director to Assistant Democratic Leader James Clyburn (D-S.C.).

Ron Fournier pointed out on Twitter that this isn’t just some intern:

It hasn’t gotten much traction today, at least not so far. Tapper covered it on CNN’s The Lead, but other than that and the above links, there hasn’t been much attention paid to it. When a 17-year DC veteran and White House aide to the President shoots at her boyfriend, isn’t that news? Or is that only news in administrations that don’t shriek that gun violence is an epidemic?
