Only in Minneapolis could this take place — and only after Major League Baseball insisted that the city build the Twins an outdoor stadium. The team played its home opener in 35-degree weather, but at least the ground was clear. After two rounds of snowfall this week, it looks like the Twins and the Mets can head over to Dave’s Famous Barbecue to warm up instead of freezing on the field:

Governor Mark Dayton declared a state of emergency yesterday in another part of Minnesota, thanks to the ice storm that preceded the snowfall. But even in the Twin Cities, the transportation mess that resulted might also impact the go/no-go decision today for the Twins:

In the Twin Cities, heavy snow, sleet and gusty winds tested the patience of morning commuters in the Twin Cities and other communities across southern Minnesota.

Across Minnesota, the State Patrol said it responded to 296 crashes plus 440 vehicles that either spun out or went off the road from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. While 39 of those accidents involved injuries, the patrol said, nobody was seriously hurt or killed.

Snowfall totals reached as high as 12 inches at Marshall in southwestern Minnesota, while parts of the Twin Cities area received 3 to 6 inches, the National Weather Service said. The storm then crawled north, hitting Duluth around midday with more than 2 inches of snow.

So far, the Star Tribune reports, the plan is to play — but that may be because the weather isn’t expected to get much better all weekend:

The club will make every effort to play the game, since the three-game series is the only visit by the Mets to Target Field this season. …

The weather figures to be lousy all weekend. The high Friday is 36 degrees, with a chance of snow. But postpone the game and you face Sunday’s forecast of rain, and a high of 42.

When Target Field was built, the worry was that any post-season play for the Twins in October might have conditions like this. Few worried about mid-April conditions. Good thing the planet keeps getting warmer, huh?
