Mitt Romney has a new ad out today, apparently web-only, although its 60-second length would make it work well on TV. The campaign should put this on air, as it effectively uses a quote from Barack Obama’s interview on CBS last night, in which Obama seemed to throw up his hands on solving America’s economic woes by stating that it would probably take “more than one President.” As Romney’s ad points out, that’s what Republicans have been saying all along:
Well, if it’s going to take more than one President, why not get started on that immediately? Especially since the current President seems to admit he’s unable to effectively deal with the issue.
That’s an opening through which any Republican could drive the proverbial Mack truck, and kudos to Romney’s team for seizing upon it quickly and effectively. The most recent CBS poll showed that two-thirds voters don’t have a clear idea why Obama wants a second term — including a majority of Democrats. Romney scores with his preparation to lead on economic issues rather than make capitulationist statements about rough seas and stormy weather. It may not quite be the same as Jimmy Carter’s malaise speech, which implied that the economic environment would never really improve, but Obama comes close in this interview.
Romney should put this on the air in Iowa, and fast. And regardless of who wins the nomination, this is a statement which Republicans should revisit often in the general election.
