Jim Geraghty points out this lesson in the danger of counting one’s chickens before they hatch. Here’s Barack Obama proclaiming that the US was “on the path to recovery” a month ago:
Since then, we found that:
- Unemployment hit 9.8%
- Job-seeker to job opening hit worst ratio in a decade
- Durable goods orders and housing resales plunged
- Mass layoffs increased 24.7%
Maybe it would be better to quit predicting the beginning of the recovery. Obama doesn’t seem to be any better at that than he does at predicting how the stimulus will impact unemployment.
