Charlie Rangel: The explosion today in Harlem is "our community's 9/11"

To paraphrase about a thousand different people on Twitter who heard this and shuddered: If you’re an American, especially an American from New York, “your” 9/11 was 9/11.

Still, a terrible tragedy. Two people are dead from the blast, more than a dozen are wounded, and many others are unaccounted for as I write this. Per the Times, the local power company got a report of a heavy gas odor near the building at 9:13 a.m. Crews were dispatched within two minutes, but not soon enough: The explosion occurred at around 9:30, before they got there. One resident said she smelled gas last night but that the smell gradually disappeared. Evidently it was building up somewhere in the building, waiting to catch a spark.
