Romney did veto $600,000 in additional funding as governor of Massachusetts for kosher kitchens in nursing homes; he was trying to hold down spending and thought nursing homes could make do with prepackaged kosher meals or kosher catering instead. The Massachusetts legislature ended up overriding his veto so nursing homes got the extra 600 grand anyway.

Somehow that became a springboard for Gingrich to hit Romney repeatedly on the stump yesterday as some sort of enemy of religious freedom, which in turn became the robocall you’re about to hear. How curious that Newt claims to know nothing about it even though he was pushing the same message on the trail. Ah well. Can’t wait to see how this new religious-flavored attack on Mitt Romney develops as the campaign progresses.

At airport rallies in Pensacola and Fort Myers, Mr. Gingrich added a new pledge in his stump speeches, saying he would sign an executive order overturning all “anti-religious” federal policies on his first day in office.

Mr. Gingrich, a Catholic convert, also sought to drag his main rival Mitt Romney into the controversy, saying that as governor, Mr. Romney had imposed a similar requirement on Catholic hospitals. Mr. Gingrich appeared to be referring to abortion provisions in the state health-care overhaul law passed in Massachusetts. The Catholic Church opposes abortion and the use of contraception.

Mr. Gingrich also accused Mr. Romney of cutting kosher meals to elderly Medicaid recipients in Massachusetts in a cost-saving effort.

“He has no understanding of the importance of conscience or the importance of religious liberty in this country,” said Mr. Gingrich of Mr. Romney, who is a Mormon. “I will make religious liberty your right, to go with God with no government interference.”

Romney’s history on exempting Catholic hospitals from laws requiring them to administer birth control is confusing. He vetoed a bill in 2005 that would have forced all hospitals to provide the “morning after” pill; after the veto was overridden, his lawyers determined that the new law left hospitals with no choice but to comply — although Romney added at the time that in his “personal view,” hospitals should provide emergency contraception in cases of rape. That’s vintage Romney nuance for you. Newt’s take on it, though? Quote: “I think Gov. Romney is extraordinarily insensitive to religious freedom in America”. Which, I guess, Romney deserved for trying to pry kosher food out of the mouths of Holocaust survivors.
