Meaningless blather aimed at applying a bit of pressure to The One in case he’s tempted to meet Boehner in the middle, but still way, way too fun not to blog. Just the thought of Media Matters abandoning its anti-Fox drudgery to start firing off press releases knocking Obama gives me a case of the warm fuzzies.

At a private meeting on Tuesday afternoon, George Soros, a longtime supporter of progressive causes, voiced blunt criticism of the Obama administration, going so far as to suggest that Democratic donors direct their support somewhere other than the president…

According to multiple sources with knowledge of his remarks, Soros told those in attendance that he is “used to fighting losing battles but doesn’t like to lose without fighting.”

“We have just lost this election, we need to draw a line,” he said, according to several Democratic sources. “And if this president can’t do what we need, it is time to start looking somewhere else.”…

“Mr. Soros fully supports the president as the leader of the Democratic Party,” said Vachon. “He was not suggesting that we seek another candidate for 2012. His comments were made in a private, informal conversation that was about the need for progressives to be more forceful in promoting their agenda. He was stressing the importance of being heard by elected officials.”

The spin afterwards was that Soros wasn’t talking about a primary challenge, merely the creation of a progressive “infrastructure” to do things Obama either can’t or won’t do. Oddly enough, I thought that “infrastructure” already existed and that its component parts were known to receive checks from George Soros from time to time, but evidently they mean a new, more robust infrastructure that will solve the problem that produced such a devastating loss two weeks ago. And what is that problem? Quote: “The main concern [at the meeting] was about messaging.” Of course it was.

The only reason I’m inclined to believe that Soros was not, in fact, hinting at primarying The One is because, as we’ve discussed here umpteen times before, you’ll never beat him. He’ll clean up among black Democrats, as he did in 2008, and he’ll win plenty of centrist Dems alienated by the hard-leftism of whoever’s dumb enough to challenge him. And of course, there won’t be a serious third-party challenge either. Don’t take my word for it; just listen to the media’s technocrat dreamboat.

Bloomberg, who isn’t affiliated with Republicans or Democrats, said a candidate running outside the two-party system couldn’t get a majority of the 538 votes in the Electoral College, which would trigger a provision in the U.S. Constitution giving the House of Representatives power to decide the election.

“Unless you get a majority, it goes to the House,” he said today during a conference sponsored by the Wall Street Journal in Washington. “It’s going to go to the Republicans because the Republicans have just taken over the House.”

Indeed, which is why this breathless HuffPo piece by Howard Fineman about a Mike Bloomberg/Joe Scarborough ticket simply must be a joke. Somehow, Bloomy’s going to take 270 of 538 electoral votes from a sitting president and a GOP challenger? And the guy who’s going to help him do it is … a morning-show host on MSNBC? In that case, why not, say, a David Petraeus/Steve Doocy ticket instead? They’d have much less money to work with than Bloomberg/Scarborough, but on the upside, we wouldn’t have to endure endless lectures from the ticket about the Ground Zero mosque. And hey — Brian Kilmeade as Secretary of State!
