Awesome: White House attacks on Rove's group lead to massive influx of donations

Actually, that’s only half of what makes it awesome. What makes it fully awesome is that, thanks to the new money, they can now target House seats that they otherwise would have had to pass on.

Alternate headline: “Are we sure Obama’s not trying to help the GOP take back the House?”

American Crossroads, a Republican organization founded by Karl Rove and former RNC chief Ed Gillespie, is reaping the benefits that come with receiving criticism from an administration polling below 50%. Since the White House began attacking the conservative group last week for not disclosing their donors, the organization has raised $13.3 million — destroying their original fundraising goals and allowing them to target traditionally “low-risk” Democrat House seats…

Many of these donations came as a positive response to the administration’s targeted vitriol. A $250 donation from an unnamed physician, for example, came with the comment, “President Obama made me aware of you and I’m sure I’m not alone. Good luck and get the GOP as many as they can win.”…

In the wake of such a large influx of money, American Crossroads, its affiliate Crossroads GPS and two other conservative groups will be collectively dedicating $50 million to defeat Democrats in a “House surge.”

This week the group is laying down $2 million in eight house districts including NY-20, NY-22, NY-25, OH-18, HI 1, CA 3, IN-2, FL-22. “These are seats where Democrats until now thought they were safe. One of them, for example, NY-22, has not had a competitive campaign since 1992,” Collegio said.

NY-22 is Hinchey’s seat. Thanks to The One, American Crossroads is now aiming at a $65 million fundraising haul instead of $50 million. Great work, champ. But this raises a question: If Rove’s group, which has gotten off relatively easy in the White House’s smear offensive, is doing this well, how well must the Chamber of Commerce be doing these days? And to follow up on that: Why, why, why is the Chamber continuing to donate to Blue Dog Democrats while the White House indulges in penny-ante demagoguery at its expense? I understand why special interests want to remain nonpartisan; I defended the NRA’s endorsement of Democrats just last week. But the NRA’s not being lambasted daily by both the president and his highest advisors. If they were, the smart play would be to use their leverage over centrist Dems and threaten to pull their endorsements unless the candidates spoke up in the organization’s defense. It’s actually doubly nasty in this case if you believe the Chamber’s explanation for not disclosing its donor list: They fear that those donors would be harassed and intimidated by anti-business interests the same way Prop 8 supporters have been threatened in California. In that case, why not fight back? Tell the White House that if it doesn’t stop immediately, the money for Blue Dogs is gone and never coming back.

Here’s Rove on Fox this morning having fun at Obama’s expense. And here, via Ben Smith, is the sad punchline to this pathetic, desperate joke.
