Video: And now, an important message for John McCain from Lady Gaga

I’m not sure how to react. On the one hand, I agree with her on “don’t ask, don’t tell” and think her approach here is kind of sweet. No stunts, no histrionics, just making the case. If you’re a celebrity and you want into the political arena, this is the way to do it: Keep it low key. (Gaga herself hasn’t always heeded that advice.) On the other hand, especially for someone whose fame relies so heavily on épater le bourgeois, it’s almost shockingly boring. I gave up after about two and a half minutes, then picked it back up near the end where she calls Chuck Schumer’s and Kirsten Gillibrand’s offices and, um, gets sent to voicemail. Whether that was by design, as an allusion to her oeuvre, or just happenstance, I don’t know. But Gillibrand, recognizing an opportunity for lots of earned media, has already replied.

Lieberman warned the left yesterday that it looks like the GOP has the votes to filibuster the defense appropriations bill unless Reid strips DADT out, so look for that next week. In the meantime, a certain recently published young author who was once herself described as “the Lady Gaga of politics” is caught in a dilemma: Side with dad, or side with DADT? Her Twitter stream reveals all, my friends.

Update: Commenters are already asking, “Who cares?” Well, like it or not, when it comes to social media, Gaga is the biggest phenomenon on the planet. She beat Obama to 10 million “fans” on Facebook and became the most followed person in the world on Twitter just a few weeks ago. A lot of young voters will watch this spot. It’s not as insignificant as you think.
