For whatever reason, the goofs on Mitt go down smoother than most. Why is that? Is it the endless flip-flopping? The too-perfect facade? The indestructible stiffness that cries out for pranking? Cheap little incidents like this that reinforce the impression of phoniness?

The gag here is based, of course, on an idea by Kos, which is reason enough to believe it won’t work. All it takes is a handful, though: It’s a dead heat between Mac and Mitt with Dems and independents currently breaking about two to one for McCain and late-deciding Republicans breaking for Romney. Anything that dilutes Maverick’s crossover support is bad news for him, and that includes the weather. It’s close enough, in fact, that I wonder if even some Huckabee supporters are thinking of voting strategically today. The question is who they should vote for. Keep Mitt alive to deny McCain a bounce into South Carolina or seize the opportunity to eliminate the guy who’s spent millions attacking their man?
