Aimed at any other candidate, it’d just be mean-spirited and typical of the Onion-MoveOn nexus. With Mitt as its target, it’s … vaguely plausible, isn’t it? More than vaguely, in fact.
No, I take it back. Against Huckabee, this would be hilarious.

The comics seem to like Mitt for a punching bag.

As a few of you know, I have been recklessly shilling Romney in the comments for a few days know. I support him, but this is one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a while. I could actually see this happening. Complete with a Kevin Madden press release “the Governor has never been tolerant of homosexuals. I think his record in MA shows this”. Something like this obviously would be funny with Huckabee, too. Is there anybody else out here that is pro-life on abortion and doesn’t care what kind of people want to get married or unioned or whatever. I just don’t think it should be a concern of the gov’t. I’m morally against it, but I don’t care if you do it as long as its not all up in my grill.

ok, ok, ok…
We get it AP.
…You hate Mitt Romney…
we get that already….
Next post please.

is the chick real or a computer simulation? she looks so fake. bad makeup maybe?
lorien1973 on January 14, 2008 at 10:00 PM
You can disown me, Mitt, if it’ll make you win Michigan…lmao.
SouthernGent on January 14, 2008 at 10:02 PM
I think its the Onion’s imitation of a MSM news caster.
malan89 on January 14, 2008 at 10:04 PM
You do realize that the whole point of the “joke” is that Republicans are bigots, right? Considering the race and gender exchanges between the Clinton and Obama camps and the fact that polling shows people are more prejudicial against Mormons than they are against women and minorities, this “joke” — while not funny — is laughable.
Spolitics on January 14, 2008 at 10:07 PM
Huh. I didn’t think that was funny. It underhandedly is calling Republicans bigots. Humor has it’s best value in truth, so any use of Romney’s variable positions is lost in the false slur to conservatives.
Spirit of 1776 on January 14, 2008 at 10:10 PM
I’m curious why the jousters like David Letterman and The Onion want to make Romney the butt of their jokes. Why Romney? He’s not the front runner in Republican party, at least not yet. He doesn’t get as much media attention as Obama, Hillary, or McCain. So why Romney? Why not other Republicans, like Huck?
terryannonline on January 14, 2008 at 10:12 PM
So if Mitt Romney is being attacked by the lefties at Moveon/The Onion, doesn’t that mean they view himn as a threat?
OK, OK, I’ll stop with the Fredhead-type evil MSM conspiracies.
BKennedy on January 14, 2008 at 10:13 PM
That’s what I’m thinking.
SECOND LOOK AT ROMNEY!!!
terryannonline on January 14, 2008 at 10:14 PM
Ha Ha SGs down with the bigot demographic.
sonnyspats1 on January 14, 2008 at 10:16 PM
Full disclosure: I’m a Mormon, but not a Mitt supporter.
By the record, Mitt has flipped, but no more than any of the major R candidates.
So, why this fixation on MItt’s phoniness? Why has normally sane people like Medved gone off the deep end? and embrace McCain, who has a long history of negative attacks and vicious backstabbing?
Mitt does have a somewhat plastic demeanor, but the reaction to that it soooo out of proportion to the reality.
What gives?
tlclark on January 14, 2008 at 10:17 PM
I don’t watch Letterman so I don’t know of any examples to go off. Mitt is stiff, which makes him vulnerable to cheap shots. He’s also been tarred with the flip-flopper brush. Comedy writers tend to be lazy and go for easy jokes and that makes him an easy target.
I’d also guess that it’s because, of the top tier candidates, he’s the most conservative (sorry, Fredheads, not counting Fred). Their audience skews left, so Mitt is a safe target. Their audience is more apt to like someone like Huck, so they won’t go after him… unless he wins the nomination, of course. You watch. If he were to win, they’d start going after him hard.
Spolitics on January 14, 2008 at 10:22 PM
I thought the Onion’s “Romney voted candidate we’d ‘most like to get in a bar fight with’” bit was much funnier.
sulla on January 14, 2008 at 10:23 PM
Its funny because its a satire of what this entire primary season has been. No matter the party or candidate, the results are the same. Faux Scandal-MSM covers faux scandal like white on rice-Part of that candidate’s base feels somehow offended by faux scandal-candidate is ripped apart by opponents b/c of faux scandal. That’s what makes this funny. Its especially funny with Romney because he is the guy everybody tries to create faux scandals around. No question the video did attempt to paint the GOP as full of bigots, but c’mon people…it’s the Onion. You should expect this.
malan89 on January 14, 2008 at 10:29 PM
I think it mocks us for attacking over silly stuff and things like the craziness of Ron Paul slides under the MSM.
I really think its the MSM being mocked in this short
William Amos on January 14, 2008 at 10:35 PM
So do I. But the Onion also gets in its subtle shots on Republicans in the process. I still think this kind of thing would also work with Hill or Silky.
malan89 on January 14, 2008 at 10:40 PM
Makes a lot of sense.
dedalus on January 14, 2008 at 10:41 PM
MSM Onion Reporter “I have to ask you Obama supporter is Obama sexist for attacking Hillary ?
Obama Supporter “No Obama has been strongly for Women’s rights all his life its just that Hillary is a dumb Bitch”
/ONN out
William Amos on January 14, 2008 at 10:43 PM
The Onion itself is a parody of the MSM. For what you said to be true, you should be able to subsitute any other candidate (don’t all the Dems oppose gay marriage?) and it shouldn’t change the joke.
Spolitics on January 14, 2008 at 10:44 PM
Ah but it isnt the candidates saying stuff its the Reporter and MSM talking head. They seem to be the parody here
William Amos on January 14, 2008 at 10:46 PM
ROMNEY IN MICHIGAN….Kos is still pushing Democrats to cross …
bnelson44 on January 14, 2008 at 10:52 PM
I don’t want over-analyze an Onion joke here (too late?), but the premise of the joke is that Republicans are bigots and that they won’t support Mitt unless he proves he’s a bigot too.
Every story they do is a tacit send-up of the MSM. But here, specifically, they’re making a joke about Republican voters being bigots.
Spolitics on January 14, 2008 at 10:53 PM
If Romney wins Michigan there is a God.
CABE on January 14, 2008 at 11:03 PM
Ha! I thought that was hilarious. The intro graphic was great, too.
someguy on January 14, 2008 at 11:03 PM
That wasn’t my idea of humor…..a thinly veiled evil and INTOLERANT attack on conservatives who view homosexual marriage as wrong maybe, but not funny. Disgusting actually…
Livefreeordie on January 14, 2008 at 11:44 PM
Some people view divorce and remarriage as wrong but don’t prioritize the fight against it as high as the GWOT or the upcoming recession. The GOP will do a lot better if it focuses on its inherent advantages on foreign policy and managing the economy and stops talking about modifying the Constitution on account of gays.
dedalus on January 14, 2008 at 11:52 PM
meh, honestly I think it’s just that out of all the presidential candidates Romney gives off the vibe of being a complete tool. Edwards is a close second.
crr6 on January 15, 2008 at 12:12 AM
yeah, but I mean gays are just GROSS! Do you know what they do to each other behind closed doors?!?!
crr6 on January 15, 2008 at 12:13 AM
Yeah, the GOP should get over it. They aren’t planning to fly planes into buildings. Better uses for our tax dollars.
dedalus on January 15, 2008 at 12:28 AM
Mitt Romney our John Kerry..
Chakra Hammer on January 15, 2008 at 1:02 AM
I’ll admit, that was funny.
lan astaslem on January 15, 2008 at 1:19 AM
And he does not support Mike Huckabee, either :-D
BKennedy on January 15, 2008 at 5:27 AM
And I also thank him for that.
Onager on January 15, 2008 at 6:52 AM
So, Allah agrees that Mitt Romney is going after the “bigot vote”, or do I misunderstand his analysis? I am far more irritated by that than I am by the parody itself- which wasn’t particularly funny, but at least we understand that it comes from the Onion, not a respected conservative blogger.
And speaking of parodies, this paragraph from the Boston.com story sounds like a parody of the perpetually outraged:
Local gay activists who are battling Romney over the governor’s push to ban same-sex marriages also reacted harshly to his comments. Marty Rouse, the campaign coordinator for Mass Equality, which supports gay marriages, said he was offended by Romney’s jokes to the socially conservative crowd. He pointed to the governor’s comment that as a conservative Republican in Massachusetts, he felt like a “cattle rancher at a vegetarian conventions.”
“Shame on him for making our families, which are part of the Massachusetts family fabric, the laugh line in his undeniable quest for the White House,” Rouse said.
That is like so vile.

This field is so weak that it has caused an epidemic of Electile Dysfunction.
A vapid, flaccid reaction to the “middle of the road”, take no chances, “I am bureaucrat hear me purr” candidates.
right2bright on January 15, 2008 at 9:31 AM
Thor?
Makes sense, considering that they ran together in 2004.
… Hm? What do you mean that wasn’t Romney? Who the bloody hell is “John Kerry?” I’m so confused.
