GHASTLY: Firefighters Ambushed in Coeur d'Alene UPDATE He's Dead

David Strom

Just a couple of hours ago, while major dad and I were watching the weekend news, there was a blurb about a fire in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, where firefighters had come under attack when they showed up.

The local news report was scary enough.

Police and emergency crews are responding to an active shooter situation, where multiple firefighters were reportedly shot.

Kootenai County Deputies are asking residents to avoid the area.

According to Northern Lakes Fire Protection Chief Pat Riley, firefighters were reportedly shot while responding to a brush fire in the area of East Nettleton Gulch Road.

According to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, there is an active shooter situation at Canfield Mountain. Injuries have been reported, but the extent is unknown. Authorities are asking the public to avoid the area.

But what has come to pass in the intervening hours is unthinkable. There are two dead, and as the sheriff just said in a news conference, 'Unknown amount of casualties.' And they have an unknown number of civilians trying to get off the mountain while the teams are still taking active sniper fire from an unknown number of assailants.

Holy mother of God.

This is unbelievable.

The FBI is en route. The sniper fire is coming from something called 'Canfield Mountain', according to the reports I've seen.

There ARE 'shelter in place' orders for everyone. The local folks are calling it a whole 'mess of forest roads you can follow all the way to Canada.'

'Shooter' or 'shooterS' - they're not sure which.

...KCSO says civilians are evacuating the area and the shooter is still at large. The sheriff's office says an active investigation is ongoing, and police are taking sniper fire on the mountain. The sheriff also said there is still an active fire in the Canfield area as crews cannot safely enter the area to fight the fire.

The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office said the sheriff will hold another press conference at 9:30 p.m. for an update to the situation.

The Shoshone County Sheriff's Office posted on Facebook advising people to avoid the Coeur d'Alene area as law enforcement deals with an active shooter incident.

They said the fire was as worrying as the shooters.

Dear Lord.

If you look at a map, you can see what the fellow in the video is talking about, backing straight up into Canada. Lots of places to get lost real fast if you know the logging trails. Nothing but deep woods.

This is WILDERNESS.

In the meantime, a truly dangerous fire burns away, unchecked.

...Sheriff Norris said the shooter or shooters remain active. Deputies are unsure whether there is a single suspect or multiple individuals involved, but confirmed that sniper fire is still occurring. It has not been confirmed, but Sheriff Norris said he believes the two people killed were firefighters.

Deputies believe the suspect intentionally set the fire to lure law enforcement and firefighters to the scene.

Firefighters said they cannot access the brush fire until the situation has been resolved. The current size of the brush fire is unknown.

Whoever's hiding up there will have folks going after him as good as he is in the woods, though, and they will be doing it for vengeance.

God speed and protect them in this manhunt.

And all our prayers and warmest thoughts to the victims' families. This should never happen.

EVERYBODY'S SHOT UP HERE!

Oh, my God - the first 911 call is absolutely harrowing.

Beege UPDATE:

First-person accounts are starting to trickle into local newspapers, and it sounds like a siege.

Need to get drones up there and find this or these sumbitches.

It's going to be a long night for these folks.

...But they are having trouble due to a combination of smoke from the wildfire and the presence of hikers and others on the mountain who had been ordered to shelter in place and are also being detected by the technology, the source told CBS News.”

But they sure as hell aren't going home until they have whoever did this.

Beege UPDATE: I was fixin' to call it a night when Jeff pinged me. The Sheriff says they've got themselves a body.

And they've lifted the shelter in place.

Our warmest thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who lost a valiant firefighting loved one tonight, and our hopes for quick and full recoveries for those who suffered wounds during this insanity.

It will be illuminating to see what drives someone to perpetrate such horrors on his fellow human beings.
