The city of Fort Myers, Florida, was set to negotiate and sign a memorandum of agreement with their police force for training, etc., with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Now, besides the valuable training and assets this provides the communities who sign up for the program, it also comes with some pretty decent federal grant money to help those local police departments come up to snuff.
Pretty good deal all around.
But it was the hardest decision of their lives, judging by the reactions and final vote of three of the members of the South FL city council.
Dear God, I have never seen such Kabuki theater in my life.
As Duke, the Bush's bean dog, says, let's 'Roll that beautiful bean footage.'
WARNING: You're gonna die.
Fort Myers City Council members hold hands and cry after being asked to authorize local law-enforcement to cooperate with ICE.

This really was a performance.
[CUE: sad trombone]
...She gripped her colleague, Diana Giraldo's hand as both women sniffled and wiped away tears, before burying her head in her hands.
Giraldo then said: 'I can't stand behind this as an immigrant, the only immigrant sitting in this council.
'Although this isn't about me, I have been in that position, and I can't even express how heavy this is in my heart and in my mind, knowing that the majority of us that come as immigrants, we don't come here to commit crimes.'
Their routine effectively blocked the motion, and the mayor was apoplectic.
...'We have jeopardized hundreds of millions of dollars worth of grant money,' he said.
'This is grant money that we depend upon, and if we're willing to sacrifice this grant money for people who don't have the legal right to be here, the burden of replacing that grant money, if we want these programs to continue or these projects to continue, is going to fall on our taxpayers.'
This was the last item on the agenda for the Ft. Myers City Council.

They planned on making a statement.
1 democrat, 1 npa, and 1 republican voted to make Ft. Myers a sanctuary city.
Watch what happens next.
Seems like the Gov wants to show us who is really on our side. https://t.co/2QSqUdb18I pic.twitter.com/UStNnXaLpZ
Holy smokes - I hope the idiots on the Ft Myers city council go all Michelle Wu on this. It is going to make great entertainment viewing, and we don't even need Tom Homan.
We've got Ron DeSantis, who has a brand new state attorney general who is pretty much as feisty as the previous one.
He fired off a 'Lemme set you weepies straight, here' letter immediately. He reminded them that state law says they will cooperate with ICE, or the state comes down on them like a ton of bricks if they don't blow their noses and get it together, stat.
"They are breaking the law..." says @AGJamesUthmeier, warning the Ft. Myers City Council's failure to approve a 287(g) agreement violates FL sanctuary cities ban. Civil/criminal penalties & removal possible: "If they don't immediately correct their problem, we will take action." https://t.co/gm5xNcUryE pic.twitter.com/gT0F88vRrq

City residents are also helping by filing complaints of official misconduct and malfeasance on the state AG's website.
Pretty hilarious bombardment is incoming on all sides.
Today, the GGOAT (Greatest Governor of ALL Time) chimed in when he was asked about it.

"It's not a policy question at this point of whether they should be involved in it. Under our law, they MUST be involved in it, and that will happen one way or another." -@GovRonDeSantis pic.twitter.com/sdVWzskOKB
SQUEEEEE!!!!
Our gov was sitting next to Homan when he was asked that question.

Oh, boy.
I can't WAIT!
Let me get my crystal ball and... rub rub rub...I foresee great difficulty ahead for the three council members who tearily kumbayahed and then voted 'no.'
I wonder if RINO Diana Giraldo would be willing to share what solution she has for the Criminal Illegal Aliens within the City of Ft. Myers?
— Christian Ziegler 🇺🇸 (@ChrisMZiegler) March 18, 2025
She voted no. She also bragged on the campaign trail that she [does not] show up with a problem without a solution'... Ready for her to… pic.twitter.com/EHLKYZP1B3
Ft Myers is a tiny blip of blue in a sea of MAGA red.
That's if DeSantis doesn't yank them off the council by their ears, as he has every authority to do for violating FL statute.
...Article IV, section 7(a), of the State Constitution authorizes the governor to suspend any state officer not subject to impeachment or any county officer on any of the following grounds: malfeasance, misfeasance, neglect of duty, drunkenness, incompetence, permanent inability to perform official duties, or commission of a felony.
A statute he's 100% behind.
This is how you get it done! https://t.co/tFCiPYVcu6

Yeah.
Darned if it isn't suddenly EMERGENCY MEETING time.
The Fort Myers City Council is facing backlash after a vote regarding a partnership with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The council will convene for an emergency meeting on Friday to reconsider whether to partner with ICE on immigration enforcement.
It's amazing how a little pressure will nudge elected officials who have gotten too comfortable doing their own thing.
It's almost like...what's that word?
Accountability.
Yeah.
