Michigan's Governor Gretchen Maleficent starting new PAC

Honestly, she is one of the most naturally frightening and menacing people in public office today. Every time I seen Michigan’s Governor Gretchen Whitmer I have two questions:

1) Where’d you park the broom?

2) Did the rest of the coven come with you for a girls’ weekend?

The gov’s been busy trying to “do things” in Michigan, which, under her gentle touch, needs a fair amount of help these days.

…Most states — 32 of them — have fully recovered the jobs they lost during the pandemic. Michigan has not. There are 70,768 fewer people employed in Michigan than there were before the pandemic, a 1.5% decrease that is the eighth-worst among the states.

As a governing Democrat, you’ll not be surprised to hear she’s working the money handouts hard, forgetting, I suppose, that Michigan doesn’t actually print the stuff itself like the federal government does. Those bills come due eventually.

…One part of Whitmer’s proposal is to give developers more subsidies to construct buildings. Lansing already gives select developers the taxes generated by construction of the building, plus the income taxes of people who will live in the building afterward. Senate Bill 289, which passed the state Senate with a 25-13 vote last month, would let administrators make more such deals and expand the payout to developers by awarding them the taxes generated by shops in subsidized buildings.

The bill’s supporters argue that the program is costless — an extraordinary claim, given that developers walk away from these deals with checks signed by the state treasury.

…Another part of Whitmer’s proposal is to create new programs to hand out more money. The state already operates a program that allows it to give out however much money it wants to whomever lawmakers choose. The only limitation is a requirement to get the appropriation committee’s approval. Why officials need another program to hand out more money to favored interests is unstated.

Beside that not going so well, her outreach to the Chinese for a “car battery plant” – trying to replace some of the jobs – is rapidly falling flat on its face as citizens and state representatives find out more about the deal she brokered, and who she actually brokered it with.

The $2.36 billion Chinese car battery plant in Northern Michigan has created lots of controversy, due to the Gotion Company’s relationship with the Chinese Communist Party.

Gotion wants to pump more than $2 billion into a new plant, thus creating 2,300 jobs in Big Rapids, but conservative opposition from former GOP gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon and others has the governor coming to the defense of the project.

Republican State Rep. Tom Kunse was an early backer of the project but then a steady drip of questions began, including the nature of the relationship of the company to the Chinese Communist Party.

It went from, ‘Boy I’m really excited about this’ to, ‘We need to tap on the brakes,’” he said.

I dunno. I’m no expert on Chinese communists – I only play one at HotAir – but they look perfectly normal to me for corporate types.

I suppose she wants to have an excuse to take off for a while, get her shiny face out in public instead of having to hide from FBI-inspired plots, and do so without being…you know…caught being someplace fun. Peasants can be such stick-in-the-muds.

So the governor is reimagining herself as a “freedom fighter.” Raising money and going on the road to actively support Democrats running for office, along with defending, as she says in her video, “fundamental freedoms.”

Of course, MAGA MAGA MAGA, ad nauseum.

…“Now, we must do everything we can to keep up the momentum for candidates who fight for everyday Americans and the will of the majority,” Whitmer — who has been a target of aggressive attacks by former President Donald Trump and other Republicans who disagreed with her shutdown policies during the Covid pandemic — said Monday in a statement issued by the PAC. “While MAGA extremists do what they can to undermine our progress, I am committed to bolstering our efforts to elect partners at the federal level who will stand up and fight like hell for working families, seniors and children across the country.”

There’s just a teensy problem with her “defending fundamental freedoms” pitch, and people are really being forthright about it.

They remember “Gretchen the COVID Dominatrix.”

It’s awkward.

In fact, she’s truly awful on the entire concept of “fundamental freedoms,” having closed churches, etc, and made some really arbitrary choices about what could remain open.

Shoot, for a bit there, you couldn’t legally walk across the street to the neighbors’ – Whitmer banned it.

Although, as governor, I’m sure there was Science™ involved in those completely fascist-leaning, radical decisions.

Like, I’m totally SURE about The Science™.

Well, happy trails to the old girl. I’m sure there will be tons of nonsensical hypocrisy and convenient omissions in fiery speeches to pick at along the way, and I look forward to it.

Michigan probably won’t even notice she’s gone.

Unless they look in the mirror.
