Dominique Strauss-Kahn tangled up in hooker orgy investigation

Today is Mardi Gras and, if I’m going to give up sordid gossip for Lent, then I’d better post this story now. Clearly, DSK has issues:

Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the former head of the International Monetary Fund and once likely French presidential favorite, arrived at a police station in Lille, France, today where he will be interrogated by police for up to 48 hours for allegedly “procuring” a handful of hookers for an orgy in the northern French town, an official close to the investigation told ABC News.

Strauss-Kahn’s alleged involvement in several orgies involving prostitutes — from Paris to Washington D.C. — came to light during a wider police investigation into a prostitution ring that began last fall, according to French and international news services.

Dubbed “The Carlton Affair” by the French media after one of the hotels in Lille were the alleged parties took place, the investigation has also reportedly implicated several hotel employees, a lawyer and a high ranking police official in France.

Here’s the most preposterous part, though: According to what one of Strauss-Kahn’s lawyers told reporters, the former IMF head unequivocally participated in the orgies but was “blissfully unaware” that anyone involved could be a prostitute. How does a man combine such worldliness with such naïveté, pray tell? I wouldn’t have believed it possible. But if Strauss-Kahn’s lawyer says so, then it must be so.

Further proof that all politicians are destined to disappoint us at one time or another. If you want to escape cynicism, don’t put your faith in these men (or women). Sooner or later, they always succumb to temptation of one sort or another (as do we all!). Mardi Gras is the perfect time to reflect on what, exactly, the wages of self-indulgence actually are: Does the tenth cookie ever taste as good as the first? It’s self-discipline that leads to freedom — not only because the self-disciplined individual doesn’t have to be disciplined by an outside influence but also because it prevents him from becoming a slave to his own bad habits. Poor DSK — no matter what the outcome of this investigation, he’s just not home free.
