Elon and the End of the American Stasi

In January 1990, two months after the Berlin Wall fell, the agents of the Stasi, or East Germany’s feared State Security Service, began shredding and burning files. They had been spying on their fellow citizens for decades. Communism was now crumbling and they had to destroy the evidence of their evil.

It was too late. On January 15, a throng of angry Germans broke into the offices of the Stasi. As one journalist put it, “The invasion of the complex of almost 50 buildings on Normannenstrasse in East Berlin sent the message to the East German leaders trying in vain to save their crumbling regime that the people would not allow the Stasi to be relaunched in another form, with a more 'acceptable' face.”

Heinz Maier was among the first to enter the headquarters. His son was in a Stasi jail for trying to flee the country. “This huge security apparatus had to be brought down and, above all else, we didn't want the files to be destroyed," he recalled in 2005. "The lights were on in one of the buildings and I could see the windows were open on an upper floor. It was clear that files were being destroyed up there. I was one of the first civilians to be allowed in to see the files. That was when the scale of what the Stasi had been doing hit me full in the face.”

Almost exactly 35 years later, we are seeing something similar playing out in Washington, D.C. Elon Musk and his nerd wrecking crew have taken over the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) building as well as the Department of Education. As the news has been reporting, they have uncovered massive fraud and a money stream to the media. Money spent by USAID on outlets like Politico and the Bulwark was then used by the left to try and destroy all opposition. This is a massive scandal, one that will rock Washington and the rest of the country. It’s just getting started.

Personally, it’s hard to overemphasize the amount of relief and satisfaction I feel. Six years ago I published my book, The Devil’s Triangle: Mark Judge vs the New American Stasi. It described my ordeal during the 2018 Brett Kavanaugh nomination. Our own American Stasi tried to destroy Kavanaugh through me. Because I had a wild youth in the 1980s, they tried to smear him using me. It was right out of the Stasi playbook. It had spied on me for weeks and even months, set honey traps, and harassed my friends and family. This was far more than “hard-hitting journalism.” This was evil.

Since the publication of The Devil’s Triangle, interesting and incredible things have happened. There was a documentary on Fox. Some Hollywood people were interested in my story.       However, I was also told by friends and even colleagues that the Kavanaugh battle was over, that we had won it, and that I didn’t need to keep writing about it. I ignored this advice because I knew, much more than my friends and critics, that I had encountered not just a political hit job, but the manifestation of an American Stasi. Like the German Stasi, it has tentacles in the government, the arts and the media. It was deep and dark and sinister - and very active. I kept writing about it because until the American Stasi was dismantled, people were going to keep getting attacked and traumatized the way I had been. We had to do what the Germans finally did in 1990. We had to storm the headquarters and rip the thing out down to the pipes.

A few weeks ago, I made news again. The message was surprising. David Enrich, an investigative reporter for The New York Times, responded to a question I had sent him about his newspaper’s 2018 coverage. Enrich responded in a way that surprised me: “I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about my role in the Kavanaugh coverage, and I would be happy to talk to you about it at some point. For now, I will just say that I have learned some lessons and would probably do certain things differently next time.”

I can’t say much more about it now, but I can say that further conservation with Enrich and with other journalists have started to reveal just how deeply the corruption in the press goes. It’s not just the psychotic opposition researchers that attempt to destroy lives - it’s finding out who is paying them and who they are connected to. The hydra that I sense and then saw behind the attacks on me and Kavanaugh in 2018 may be revealed. It will be every bit as bad as I have been saying.

What Elon Musk has done in the past few weeks is the digital equivalent of those angry Germans storming the Stasi offices 35 years ago. If my experience is any indication, what he is going to uncover is going to shock the nation and change American history.
