A backpack that apparently contained pipe bombs exploded in Elizabeth, NJ as a police robot investigated it near a transit railway station last night.

The explosion took place just before 1 AM as a police robot was “cutting into the device” that was found in a backpack left in a trash can near train tracks.

According to NJ.com, the backpack was discovered around 9:30 PM:

The incident unfolded after two men found the backpack in a waste basket on North Broad Street and Julian Place around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, the mayor said.

The men took the backpack “because they thought it was of some value,” walked for a bit, then saw wires and a pipe, dropped the package and notified Elizabeth Police, he said.

Bollwage told reporters the explosives were found not far from Wally’s Pub near the train station.

“If that pub was crowded and there was a lot of people there, it could have severely injured, killed and maimed many, many people,” Bollwage told reporters.

Meanwhile, according to the NY Post, a traffic stop near Staten Island has resulted in five people taken into custody for questioning in relation to Saturday night’s bombing in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan.

The men were heading over the Verrazano Bridge from Staten Island when they were stopped Sunday night.

Sources said the FBI suspected the men may have had a role in the bombing and were questioning them at the FBI headquarters in Manhattan.

It is believed the men, who live in New Jersey, were heading to the airport when they were busted.

For those unfamiliar with the greater New York City area, Elizaeth, NJ is right across the river from Staten Island. if you are in Elizabeth and you want to get to JFK Airport you’d cross onto Staten Island and cross the Verrazano Bridge into Brooklyn where, it appears, these 5 people were taken in for questioning.
