Cinco de Mayo Special: Mexico grovels at feet of Trump

It’s not quite the scene from Donald Trump’s sketch on Saturday Night Live when the President of Mexico delivers a check to “President Trump” to pay for a border wall, but the change of tone coming from Mexican officials in the hours after Trump secured the GOP nomination is somewhat comical in its own right.

In what appears to be a concerted effort to change the tone out of Mexico City, two different prominent Mexican officials went out of there way to soften their stance against the presumptive nominee.

Former President of Mexico Vicente Fox, who famously told Fusion’s Jorge Ramos he wasn’t “going to pay for that f***ing wall” last February, sat with Joel Pollak at Breitbart and struck a very different tone, indeed:

“I apologize. Forgiveness is one of the greatest qualities that human beings have, is the quality of a compassionate leader. You have to be humble. You have to be compassionate. You have to love thy neighbor.  Love your nation. Love the world. Yes, I’m humble enough as leadership be, [a] compassionate leader. If I offended you, I’m sorry. But what about the other way around? I don’t think he should follow the strategy of attacking others, offending others, to get to his purpose. There are other ways and means of doing it. I invite him to come to Mexico and to see what Mexico is all about.”

Fox continued the apology tour last night on The O’Reilly Factor by striking a very different tone about a potential Trump presidency and about the economic ramifications of America’s open border with Mexico.

If that’s not enough to salt the rim of your margarita glass this May 5th, there’s more.

In The Hill‘s coverage of the Mexican friendship offensive titled “Mexico changes its tune on Trump,” Mexico’s equivalent of our Treasury Secretary went out of his way to communicate that his country was not interested in continuing their strident and meddlesome comments from the past several weeks:

In an interview with The Hill Monday, Secretary of the Economy Ildefonso Guajardo said “it’s not very convenient for foreign officials” to comment on U.S. elections. He said they will instead focus on the massive economic potential of the U.S.-Mexico partnership.

“The mere fact that Mexico has become an item in the debate should be an opportunity to reinforce the U.S-Mexico relationship. In a way, underlying that reality is the fact that whatever happens in Mexico has an impact in the U.S. That in itself is good,” said Guajardo.

In February, Mexico’s Foreign Minister called Trump “ignorant and racist.”  In March the President of Mexico compared Trump to Hitler.  And in April, Guajardo threatened that Mexico would no longer be a trading partner with the US if Trump is elected. Trump’s response at the time:

Oh what a difference a presumed nomination makes.

Trump also appeared on O’Reilly last night. Toward the end of the interview he was asked if he had a message for Fox who was appearing later on the program. Trump simply said, “Get your money ready because you’re going to pay for the wall.”

Happy Cinco de Mayo, America.
