During a rally Wednesday in Indiana, presidential candidate Donald Trump bragged that former heavyweight boxing champion (remember boxing?) Mike Tyson had endorsed him.

As the Indy Star described it:

“Mike Tyson endorsed me,” Trump told the crowd. “I love it. He sent out a tweet. Mike. Iron Mike. You know, all the tough guys endorse me. I like that, OK?

“But Mike said, ‘I love Trump. I endorse Trump.’ And that’s the end. I’m sure he doesn’t know about your economic situation in Indiana. But when I get endorsed by the tough ones, I like it, because you know what? We need toughness now. We need toughness.”

Perhaps Trump didn’t remember that his buddy Mike was convicted of rape in Indianapolis several years ago. But Hoosiers don’t forget. The Tyson rape trial was similar in media focus and coverage to the OJ Simpson trial. And when that kind of attention comes to a town like Indy, it’s not soon forgotten.

Our friends at Twitchy picked up on the awkward moment right away.

So did Indianapolis radio host Greg Garrison. Garrison, you see, was the prosecutor who made the case against Mike Tyson at the time. He knows full well exactly what kind of disgusting animal Tyson was the night of the sexual assault against a seventeen-year-old Sunday school teacher.

When Garrison heard of Trump’s declaration, he decided to dedicate the opening of his program Thursday with a monologue laying out the facts of the case. “Rapists are not ‘tough guys’,” he admonished.

Listen to Garrison’s passionate explanation of just how horrible Tyson’s behavior was the night of the rape and hear him describe the details of the case and what the events did to that young woman and her family and then reflect on Trump’s statement at the time of Tyson’s conviction as discovered by Newsbusters:

It’s my opinion that, to a large extent, Mike Tyson was railroaded in this case… You have a young woman that was in his room, in his hotel late in the evening at her own will. You have a young woman who was seen dancing for the beauty contest, dancing with a big smile on her face. Looked happy as can be.

This was not Trump’s proudest moment and his affiliation with Tyson is hardly something to brag about. So maybe he should stop bragging about it.
