Mayor Eric Adams Abruptly Cancels Trip to Southern Border

New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced Thursday he was coming to the southern border this weekend. His trip was abruptly canceled on Saturday.

It would have been a timely trip, given the national coverage of illegal aliens storming a razor wire fence in El Paso earlier in the week. Adams was invited to go to Mexico by Sister Norma Pimentel, executive director of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley in San Juan. It would have been his second trip to Texas since Biden's border crisis began.

“As Lent draws to a close, our team was excited to stand with faith and humanitarian leaders who have dedicated their lives to serving the most needy among us, and we were eager to discuss our work in New York City and explore new ways to collaborate with leaders in cities across the country,” mayoral spokeswoman Amaris Cockfield said in a statement Saturday.

“But due to safety concerns at one of the cities we were going to visit in Mexico flagged by the U.S. Department of State, we have decided to pause this visit at this time,” Cockfield said.

No information has been provided on which city was determined to be unsafe.

The trip would have marked his latest attempt to draw attention to the financial burden that illegal aliens are putting on New York City. Adams wants to pressure the Biden administration to send money to the city. Adams is no stranger to canceling trips at the last moment. Last November he was in route to Washington, D.C. for meetings at the  White House about support for the city's illegal alien crisis when he learned the FBI raided the home of his chief fundraiser as part of an investigation into his 2021 mayoral campaign. He returned to NYC instead of continuing with this schedule.

When his trip was announced on Friday, Adams released a statement

“Finding solutions to national issues requires national collaboration, and I am eager to meet with Sister Norma Pimentel, her team, and other leaders to discuss our work in New York City and explore new ways to collaborate with leaders in cities across the country,” Adams said in a statement.

What a squirrely situation. The mayor announced the day before he is to travel to Texas to highlight the problems created by a wide-open southern border and then the next day said "Never mind.' He said he'll come some other time.

There will surely be plenty of time for the mayor to re-schedule his trip since President Biden has no intention of closing the U.S.-Mexico border. The Biden border crisis will continue for as long as he is in the White House. However, why didn't he say which city it is that the State Department warned against traveling to? Did his staff not check everything out before he accepted the invitation and made his announcement? The non-transparent way in which his cancellation was handled leads me to think Mayor Adams simply changed his mind at the last minute.

Last October Mayor Adams went to Central and Southern America on a mission to work with leaders on solutions to the flood of illegal immigrants arriving on the Mexican border and crossing the border into the United States. He didn't have security concerns then, it seems.

Since spring 2022, the Big Apple has seen nearly 185,000 asylum seekers arrive at its door, costing taxpayers billions to house, clothe and feed them.

More than 64,500 migrants remain in the city’s care.

For its part, the federal government has only provided around $150 million to help offset the cost, which is expected to come in at just over $10 billion through the next fiscal year.

Too bad. So sad. Not really. NYC is a sanctuary city. Adams talked big about the virtues of a sanctuary city before they began arriving in such large numbers. Now it's unmanageable, he says, and financially unsustainable. Not all are coming on buses or planes from Texas but thousands are. Governor Abbott has no plans to stop sending them until the Texas border is secured. He is doing Joe Biden's job and Biden is fighting him every step of the way. Why should Texas be expected to shoulder all the burden?

This is what you wanted, Mayor Adams. Enjoy it now.

For Adams to travel to Texas a couple of times or go on a much-publicized trip to Central and South America doesn't bring any more publicity to Biden's border crisis than a story on the nightly news. Americans are aware of what is going on because the border crisis has turned into a catastrophe that the press can no longer avoid covering.

CBP released the February numbers in its monthly updated report. When the news is pretty good, the update is released close to the beginning of the month. This report is not good so it was released toward the end of the month.

CBP reports that February's numbers are the highest recorded for February. In February, 189,922 illegals were recorded crossing the southern border. 112 criminals with priors for sex crime convictions were reported. To date, the report shows that 70 people with names that match the terror watch list have been apprehended during FY 2024.

Nothing changes in Biden's America along the southern border. He is guilty of dereliction of duty. There is an increase in crime committed by illegal aliens that is making cities and towns across the country unsafe for residents. If Mayor Adams is so concerned about visiting an unsafe city, perhaps he should take a look at his own.
