Former National Security Leaders Sound the Alarm to Congress in a Letter on Invasion at the Southern Border

The United States has never suffered an invasion of the homeland, yet that is what is happening right now.

That statement seems obvious to anyone paying attention to what is happening on the southern border. The word invasion was initially viewed as too harsh of a word. It might be seen as having military connotations or implying military action. Over the course of President Biden’s term in office, the crisis created by an open border with Mexico has been all but ignored by most media outlets except for one. Fox News Channel reports on the border every day. The cable news network’s reporters are on the border and do live shots as illegal immigrants cross the Rio Grande River and while others simply walk into our country by coming through a section of the border wall.

Joe Biden is a man who likes to boast about the historic firsts that happen in his administration. The flow of millions of illegal immigrants coming over the southern border at this level is historic, that’s true. But let’s be honest, it is an invasion. The numbers of illegal aliens who are apprehended by Border Patrol or Texas law enforcements officials are all-time highs. The same is true of those labeled as gotaways. True numbers of gotaways are not available because no one knows who they are or where they came from or where they went once they were in the U.S. They run instead of turning themselves in for processing.

As a side note – the monthly update of apprehensions at the southern border from DHS has not been released this month. The CBP numbers are predicted to be at an all-time high in the December tally and DHS is keeping the report under wraps instead of releasing the numbers. Each month, the release of numbers is later and later. The numbers are not getting better, even though traditionally this time of year brings a slowdown in activity. Perhaps the administration will release the monthly update in a Friday evening news dump. That frequently happens. I’ll be keeping an eye out for it.

The Biden border crisis is not only a humanitarian crisis, it is a national security crisis. Some former national security intelligence officials are sounding the alarm to warn lawmakers in Washington, D.C. about the invasion of military-aged male illegal aliens into our country. They warn that these men pose “one of the most pernicious ever” threats to American security.

It’s enough to send a chill up your spine. Many of us think about something horrible happening at the hands of illegal aliens who are planning a terrorist event, including myself. But, conversations are usually muted on the risk of a terrorist attack because it’s not something we want to think about. The possibly of something happening is real and likely. The retired intelligence officers want everyone to wake up and act before is too late.

The situation at the Texas border is a timely story. Push has come to shove between Texas and the Biden administration. Biden’s DOJ continues to sue Texas to stop the state from protecting its border with Mexico. Half of the states have come out in support of Governor Greg Abbott as I write this. Twenty-five governors have proclaimed their support and I have to be honest, there are some civil war vibes developing. Joe Biden, the man who ran as a unifier, is breaking our country apart and it is through his intentional actions.

Ten former FBI executives, including some who oversaw intelligence, counterterrorism, criminal, and training operations sent a letter on January 17 to House Speaker Mike Johnson, Senate Leader Chuck Schumer, and the chairmen of the House and Senate committees that deal with U.S. intelligence and homeland security. The letter was along the same lines as recent language coming from FBI Director Christopher Wray who said that our country’s security lights are “blinking red” and from Governor Abbott, who has declared the border crisis as an invasion. The former officials are particularly worried about the surge of military aged single male illegal aliens coming from countries hostile to the United States.

“In its modern history the U.S. has never suffered an invasion of the homeland and, yet, one is unfolding now,” the FBI luminaries wrote. “Military aged men from across the globe, many from countries or regions not friendly to the United States, are landing in waves on our soil by the thousands – not by splashing ashore from a ship or parachuting from a plane but rather by foot across a border that has been accurately advertised around the world as largely unprotected with ready access granted.

“It would be difficult to overstate the danger represented by the presence inside our borders of what is comparatively a multi-division army of young single adult males from hostile nations and regions whose background, intent, or allegiance is completely unknown,” they added.

Speaker Johnson’s resolve was strengthened after receiving the letter. It is a timely subject because the Democrat-controlled Senate is working on legislation that provides funding for the southern border in order to get funding for Ukraine. Johnson said Republicans have to hold the line against anything short of a deal that completely closes the border. Senator Ron Johnson agrees.

“This letter from national security leaders is further confirmation of what we already know: President Biden’s open border policies are increasing the risks of terrorist attacks on U.S. soil,” Johnson said. “An unprecedented threat at this scale requires transformational policy changes immediately to secure the border and end the administration’s mass release of illegals into our country.”

Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., a top Republican on the Senate Homeland Security Committee, said the letter captured the reality of the threat from some of the nation’s most experienced law enforcement veterans of protecting the homeland.

Kevin Brock, the former assistant director of intelligence and former principal principal deputy director of the National Counterterrorism Center, said the group of signers was limited to ten because of the urgency of the situation. They thought their voices and decades of professional experience would clearly deliver the message. It’s not political, it’s coming from their experience in dealing with hostile nations. They want attention drawn to the impending threats.

In other words, we’ve been lucky so far. It’s past time that Washington paid attention to what is going on and act to protect the homeland.

“Any violation of the nation’s immigration laws increases risks, but the surge in numbers of single military-aged males descending upon American cities and towns is alarming and perilous,” they wrote.

“Additionally, they are not just from terror-linked regions, but from China and Russia as well as hostile adversaries of the U.S. with aspirations to devastate national infrastructure.”

The timing is ripe for something horrific to happen. The country is distracted and split over supporting Governor Abbott. Red states are sending a clear message to Joe Biden. Will he finally listen and start acting? He doesn’t have to wait for Congress, he can act today to bring back the programs and policies he cancelled on his first day in office with the stroke of his pen. It’s an election year. Let’s hope he wakes up before it is too late.
