U.S. Senate delegation sought shelter from Hamas rocket fire in Tel Aviv - will Biden go?

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer led a bipartisan delegation of senators to Israel over the weekend. While in Tel Aviv, they had to seek shelter from Hamas rocket fire.

Schumer is the first Jewish Senate majority leader and the highest ranking Jewish elected official in the United States. The delegation of senators included Republican Sens. Mitt Romney and Bill Cassidy (LA) and Democratic Sens. Jacky Rosen (NV) and Mark Kelly (AZ). Schumer posted a photo on X (formerly Twitter) of the delegation in a shelter waiting out the missile attack.

“While in Tel Aviv today, our delegation was rushed to a shelter to wait out rockets sent by Hamas,” the majority leader wrote. “It shows you what Israelis have to go through. We must provide Israel with the support required to defend itself.”

The senators met with Israeli officials.

Schumer cut short a trip to China, where he was shaking hands with Xi, in order to come back home when Hamas started its war with Israel. The delegation went to Israel to show support. It is likely that Biden’s handlers are reluctant to arrange for him to make the trip due to his physical frailty. Reports are that he finds overseas trips very difficult. The 80-year-old president is said to look more tired than usual since Hamas began its war.

Even CBS reporter Scott Pelley noted how tired Biden looked during his interview with him for 60 Minutes

Even for normal-aged presidents, their time in the White House visually ages them. Biden was old and slow to begin with so the stress of the problems he faces must be particularly difficult. We see his staff try to shelter him from situations like taking questions from the press where he frequently appears confused and offers odd answers.

Never fear, old Joe is too vain to step away and go enjoy his retirement years at his beach house with his family.

Heaven help us. The last thing Joe Biden has brought about is world peace. Four American embassies have closed around the world on his watch. The U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan was a complete disaster and ushered in the Taliban’s takeover, Putin was emboldened to invade Ukraine, and Hamas attacked Israel. An American journalist is being held prisoner in Russia for the first time since the end of the Cold War. Where, exactly, has Biden improved the world and brought peace?

American officials and Israeli officials are talking about Biden making a trip to Israel later this week, according to Axios. Netanyahu invited Biden to Israel during a phone call Saturday. Both Israeli and American officials confirmed on Sunday that talks are underway to arrange a visit. A visit by Biden would show support and be a warning to Iran and Hezbollah to back away from the fight. No decision has been made yet on if Biden will make the trip.

Does anyone really think that a trip to Israel will wave off Iran or Hezbollah from joining Hamas in its war with Israel? Why would Iran be intimidated by Joe Biden? He appeases Iran at every turn. His prisoner swap with Iran that included unfreezing $6M dollars of Iranian assets emboldened Hamas to attack Israel. Iran funds Hamas.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is organizing an international conference on the war in Gaza for later this week. Biden is invited. However, Egypt has already begun to side with Palestinians, which is no surprise.

Sisi earlier Sunday told Secretary of State Tony Blinken that Israel’s response to the Hamas attack has gone from self-defense to collective punishment, the Egyptian presidency said in a statement.

Sisi also told Blinken that the lack of any political horizon for the Palestinians led to “an explosion of anger.” He said the current crisis is very dangerous and could have consequences on the entire region.

Schumer promised to lead the effort to provide support for Israel in the Senate.

While negotiations are ongoing, Schumer earlier said he expects any spending package should include aid for Israel and Ukraine, along with possible aid for Taiwan as it faces threats from Beijing and money for the U.S. border.

The Biden administration has not filled the vacant ambassadorship in Israel. There is a new envoy.

Ambassador David Satterfield was appointed Special Envoy for Middle East Humanitarian Issues, where he will focus on ensuring “life-saving assistance can reach vulnerable people throughout the Middle East,” the State Department announced Sunday.

In the interview with 60 Minutes, Biden made an out-of-place declaration, in my opinion. He said that Israel must not “occupy” Gaza. This is not the time for that talk. Biden, as usual, speaks first and has to walk his words back later. He should do that with this remark, too.

In an interview with “60 Minutes” on Sunday, President Joe Biden warned Israel not to reoccupy Gaza, saying it would be “a big mistake.” Biden, who spoke with CBS’ Scott Pelley, said: “What happened in Gaza, in my view, is Hamas and the extreme elements of Hamas don’t represent all the Palestinian people. And I think that it would be a mistake for Israel to occupy Gaza again.”

But “taking out the extremists” there, Biden added, “is a necessary requirement.”

Biden also said he supported a humanitarian corridor to aid civilians impacted by the conflict and to allow people to leave Gaza.

We’ll see if Biden is up to the trip to Israel this week.
