Buoy barrier wall going up in Rio Grande River to slow border crossings

How about a big beautiful wall of buoys placed in the Rio Grande River to deter illegal border crossings? That is what Governor Abbott announced will be happening and the funding has been approved by the state legislature. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

A special session is now underway in the Texas Legislature. Governor Abbott signed six bills related to border security on Thursday and made the announcement about the buoy wall. Passage of border security legislation is a top priority for the special session. The state legislature approved $5.1B to secure the border and the buoy barrier will be funded through that.

“What we’re doing right now, we’re securing the border at the border,” Abbott said. “What these buoys will allow us to do is to prevent people from even getting to the border.”

Imagine that. Texas taxpayers are on the hook for an additional $5.1 BILLION to secure the state’s border with Mexico. Border security and immigration is a federal responsibility. Joe Biden is derelict in securing the border and protecting the sovereignty of the United States. Without sovereignty, a country is not a country. That’s not hyperbole. Border security is national security. The people coming across the border are not being properly screened, drug cartels control sections of the border, human smuggling is rampant. The Biden border crisis doesn’t simply remain in Texas. Every state is a border state now. This is Biden’s America.

The first 1,000 feet of buoys will be put up at Eagle Pass, the epicenter of the Biden border crisis. Steve McCraw, director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, calls Eagle Pass “the center of gravity for smuggling.” The first section of the buoy barrier wall will cost less than $1M and its deployment begins immediately. McCraw said that the buoys have been tested by special operators, tactical operators, and specialists with Border Patrol. The barrier wall can be put up quickly and it can be moved as needed.

Wading across the Rio Grande River to get from the Mexican side to the Texas side of the border is dangerous. It’s dangerous for both the illegal immigrants and the Texas National Guard troops or Border Patrol agents who patrol the border. Law enforcement along the border rescues border crossers who are in danger of drowning. A member of the Texas National Guard drowned last year in Eagle Pass as he attempted to rescue migrants in the river. “We don’t want people to come across and continue to put their lives at risk when they come between the points of entry,” McCraw said.

The purpose of the buoy barrier wall is to act as a deterrent. It’s to prevent illegal immigrants from getting into the river. The buoys can be overcome but it will take a lot of effort and skill. If they try to wait it out and just hold onto the buoys, they will eventually get tired and hungry and want to go back to the Mexican side. They won’t be able to swim underneath the buoys, either, because there will be webbing going down into the water and anchors to the bottom of the river.

Immigration activists who don’t care about the rule of law or law and order on the southern border criticize the plan. The Texas chapter of the League of United Latin Americans Citizens lashed out against Abbott’s plan. State Director Rodolfo Rosales called the plan “inhumane, barbaric, and an ill-conceived plan.” I would argue that that is a whole lot of projection coming from Rosales, but perhaps that is just me. Rosales is concerned about the buoys causing loss of life but didn’t bother to explain how that might happen. The rhetoric is just to scare people.

“We view it as a chilling reminder of the extreme measures used throughout history by elected leaders against those they do not regard as human beings, seeking only to exterminate them, regardless of the means employed. It is with profound horror and shame that we bear witness to the consideration of these measures, which are evidently intended as political theatre but will undoubtedly result in the loss of innocent lives among the refugees seeking asylum in the United States.

This is the state of the southern border. Portable buoys are being put up in the Rio Grande River to stop illegal immigrants from crossing the border. Biden and DHS Secretary Mayorkas refuse to do what is necessary to secure the border. This is all intentional. Now that there is a presidential election in the near future, Biden and Mayorkas will pretend to be “doing something” when it’s all smoke and mirrors. No one is fooled. Numbers don’t lie. Cartels are regrouping after the expiration of Title 42 and the overwhelming waves of illegal immigrants will begin again. As long as Joe Biden is president, there is no hope for border communities or border states.
