Don’t just listen to the words of a politician. Watch what they do. Their actions speak volumes. Take, for example, Senator Joe Manchin’s sole campaign staffer. It turns out that he has posted several social media posts that are violent against former President Trump. Allegedly, he has been fired.
Charlie Collins has worked for Joe Manchin’s campaigns since 2018. When it was discovered that he called for Trump to “hang” on social media, he was the sole campaign staffer listed on Manchin’s April 2023 quarterly Federal Elections Commission filings as paid a salary. That makes him look like the campaign’s sole paid employee, at least right now. Manchin has not announced if he will run for re-election to the Senate in 2024. A spokesman for Manchin’s campaign said, “This individual is no longer employed by the campaign. Senator Manchin has always believed that a core pillar of our democracy is civil and respectful disagreement and he has zero tolerance for violence or threats of violence.”
Hmm. Joe Manchin goes around promoting himself as Mr. Can’t We All Just Get Along? He claims to be a moderate who wants to work with everyone to get things done. He’s preachy about civility and finding a common cause. Yet, here is his sole campaign staffer, someone he has employed since 2018, who has a history of posting very nasty things on social media. Does he not keep up with his staff? In the case of his campaign, which he doesn’t even have right now, he only has one person to monitor.
In one post from Jan. 17, 2020, Collins shared a political cartoon of Uncle Sam leading Trump to a noose with Manchin’s staffer writing, “Hang the convict.”
Another post from April 25 of that year included a meme of Trump picking his nose and claiming the former president was “trying to kill us all” by suggesting treatments for COVID-19 amid the onset of the pandemic.
“Hey Trumpsters, have you finally figured out this idiot is trying to kill all of us?” Collins wrote. “Between his idiotic statement about the disinfectant and his press conferences promoting hydroxychloroquine, that doesn’t work, how much more evidence do Americans need to see what a complete moron this man is.”
A post by Collins from Sept. 1, 2021, shared a picture from the Occupy Democrats Facebook page depicting Trump along with GOP Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado, and other Republican lawmakers as members of the Taliban.
“These are two corrupt people in public office,” Collins wrote on Facebook on October 12, 2020, with pictures of Sens. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Lindsay Graham, R-S.C. “McConnell on Fox laughing that he blocked everything from Obhamas administration.”
“I want any Republican to explain to me why it’s OK to confirm this new judge in an election year but they were so against it in previous years,” he continued. “I hope these two smug hypocritical bastards gets defeated. I swear Republicans are authoritarians.”
Nice guy, eh? Hanging, the Taliban, authoritarians. Interesting way of describing the opposition.
Granted, campaign staff operate a little differently than office staff. Campaigns are rough and tumble environments. Candidates hire aggressive people. However, campaign staff has to have good judgment. Does this guy not understand his candidate’s schtick? Collins is a reflection of Manchin.
In other posts, Collins called Trump a dictator, accused him of not being a religious man, and said Trump should be locked up.
This isn’t the first time Manchin’s hypocrisy has been on display. Remember when he was a deciding vote on the Inflation Reduction Act and sold his soul to Chuck Schumer on the promise of pipeline approval in West Virginia? Except the bill had nothing to do with fighting inflation and everything to do with climate. And Schumer went back on his word to Manchin. Shocker to no one but Joe Manchin, apparently. Or, it was all an act all along for the voters back home. Either way, it doesn’t reflect well on Manchin.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) released a statement.
Joe Manchin’s sole campaign staffer called to “hang” former President Trump on social media, Fox News reports.
Charlie Collins, who has been on Manchin’s campaign payroll since 2018, also shared posts claiming the former president was “trying to kill us all,” and depicting Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Jim Jordan, and other Republican lawmakers as members of the Taliban.
“Joe Manchin should immediately condemn these disgraceful posts by one of his staffers – unless he agrees with them.” – NRSC Spokesman Tate Mitchell
