Actor Ben Savage is running for the seat being vacated by Adam Schiff in the House. He announced his decision in a post on Instagram this week. Savage is best known for his role as Cory Matthews on the hit ’90s ABC sitcom “Boy Meets World.”

His announcement on social media included mentions of being a longtime resident of the congressional district and of course his union membership.

Together, we can do better.

I am a proud Californian, union member, and longtime resident of District 30 who comes from a family of unwavering service to our country and community.

I firmly believe in standing up for what is right, ensuring equality and expanding opportunities for all.

I’m running for Congress because it’s time to restore faith in government by offering reasonable, innovative and compassionate solutions to our country’s most pressing issues.

And it’s time for new and passionate leaders who can help move our country forward. Leaders who want to see the government operating at maximum capacity, unhindered by political divisions and special interests.

Please join our movement!

This isn’t his first venture into running for political office. He ran for the West Hollywood City Council in 2022, unsuccessfully. California’s 30th District encompasses West Hollywood, where Savage lives, Burbank, and parts of Pasadena. I wrote about his candidacy in January before Schiff officially declared his candidacy to replace Senator Dianne Feinstein. Savage filed a statement of organization with the FEC, registering as a Democrat candidate for California’s 30th House District. So, formally announcing it on social media isn’t a huge surprise.

Interestingly, Savage starts by saying that voters deserve better. Schiff has held that seat in the House since 2001. Schiff has proven to be a liar and a loser. He said for four years that he had proof that Trump was a crook, a stooge for Putin, and every other bad thing possible in a president. It turned out that the Steele dossier was phony and the product of Hillary Clinton’s campaign. The Senate did not impeach Trump. Schiff is the boy who cried wolf, as many Democrats in Congress are since the Trump presidency. What a clown show they conducted during the Trump years. Schiff was a lead clown.

Savage has some competition for the seat.

He is also not the only candidate vying for Schiff’s soon-to-be vacant seat. Democratic state Sen. Anthony Portantino, Democratic state Assembly member Laura Friedman, who previously served as the Mayor of Glendale, and West Hollywood mayor Sepi Shyne have all filed paperwork to run.

He sounds like a run-of-the-mill Democrat with a tendency to go to the crazy progressive dark side.

Savage wrote on his campaign website that his priorities will include improving police-citizen interactions through more intensive training and “checks and balances to root out corruption.” He also wrote that he will fight for more affordable housing and veteran resources, protect unions, push for universal pre-k, school meals and community college, and work to secure more funding for mental health and substance abuse services. He also said it’s “important that we codify Roe v. Wade” and said that he will “oppose offshore drilling” initiatives while supporting environmental regulations.

He supports all the usual freebies that the Democrats demand – universal pre-k, community college, protecting unions, while going off the deep end with banning offshore drilling and codifying Roe v Wade.

His former co-stars and his fans support his campaign.

The announcement seems to have garnered support from both fans and co-stars of the ABC series, with one person commenting, “Boy meets congress!”

Fellow “Boy Meets World” actor Matthew Lawrence, who played Jack Hunter, said, “Let’s go!!!”

We’ll see if the celebrity outsider angle works. Otherwise, he’s competing against experienced politicians, including a couple of mayors. It has worked in California in the past, though for Republican candidates, such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sonny Bono, and Clint Eastwood.
