Feel-Good Friday: Adorable kittens and a hero dog edition

Frontier Airlines is stepping up to help some homeless kitties. A Las Vegas animal shelter named three kittens Frontier, Spirit, and Delta. They were only two-weeks old when they were rescued in Las Vegas at the end of last month. Frontier Airlines said it will offer free flight vouchers to whoever adopts them. It sounds like a purr-fect deal.

The kittens are at The Animal Foundation, Nevada’s largest animal shelter. They will be ready for adoption in about a month once they grow larger in size. After learning about the names of the kittens, Frontier Airlines announced it will provide four $250 vouchers to the fur-ever parents of Frontier. The new fur-ever parents of Spirit and Delta will each receive two $250 vouchers. All vouchers are valid through the end of 2023.

So tiny and adorable! I’m sure with all the publicity that the airline’s offer will receive, they will have homes in no time.

The shelter said it is unusual to have a litter of kittens at this time of year. The spokesperson for The Animal Foundation said they knew the kittens should have special names.

The Animal Foundation has a habit of giving cats and dogs quirky names. The shelter posted the pictures and names of the three littermates on social media. There was even a joke involved that one was going to be named Southwest, but after the huge kerfuffle during the holiday travel season, that name was nixed. ‘Meet the newest additions to our kitten nursery! Spirit’s name used to be Southwest, but due to recent events, our marketing team requested we change it,’ it wrote on Twitter. Good move.

Frontier Airlines explained that the offer of vouchers when the kitties are adopted is in line with the company’s values.

‘We were delighted the rescue organization decided to name these three adorable kitties after airlines, including ours,’ Frontier said. ‘Underscoring the plight of animals is near and dear to us.’

‘We were more than happy to provide a little extra incentive to encourage the adoption of these three precious kittens,’ Frontier added.

As an example, the airline referenced its “Plane Tails” program as part of their commitment to animal welfare. Each aircraft is decorated with an animal on its tail, many of them from threatened or endangered species.

Good for Frontier for stepping up. It’s good publicity all around and hopefully the kitties will be in their fur-ever homes soon.

That brings us to Roger, the hero dog. Roger rescued his 94-year-old neighbor who had been stuck in his car for almost 24 hours in very cold weather.

Roger is a Jack Russell terrier and poodle mix. He ran away from his home in Ringwood, England last month and went into his neighbor’s garage. His owner followed him and found Morris Cohen, the neighbor. He was caught in the car’s footwell.

It’s quite a story. Cohen was getting out of his car when his walking stick snapped. He fell into the footwell and was wedged under the brake and clutch pedals. He was stuck and his family was away.

No one could hear his calls for help, so he remained stuck overnight as temperatures dropped. Cohen could feel the hypothermia setting in.

Around 10 a.m. the next day, Roger arrived, sniffing around the open garage after, perhaps, hearing Cohen’s yells for help, according to the newspaper. Roger—fabulous human dog name by the way—didn’t leave his side.

Eventually, Frances Wall, Roger’s owner, came to get her dog and found Cohen. She and her brother couldn’t get Cohen out, so they called emergency services. Three firefighters freed him and took him to a hospital, the Daily Echo reported.

“I owe my life to that dog,” Cohen told the newspaper. “They said if I would’ve been there for a few more hours, I would have been a goner.”

Cohen remained in the hospital for ten days before returning home. He brought with him a Christmas stocking filled with dog treats for Roger.

Those are a couple of stories about our four-legged friends to ease us into the weekend. Good times, good times.
