Pelosi denies reality as she rejects polls showing voters care more about the economy than abortion

Speaker Nancy Pelosi was interviewed on MSNBC by host Andrea Mitchell Tuesday, which Ed wrote about yesterday, focusing more on media bias. Pelosi’s response to Mitchell about polls that clearly show the economy and inflation as the top issues for voters in the midterm elections is worth taking apart as well. Pelosi rejected those polls and said that the top issue for voters is abortion. She also denies that Democrats are not appealing to voters with their messaging.

Mitchell confronted Pelosi about voters concerns versus what Democrats are focused on as they campaign for re-election. A NYT/Siena College poll is particularly devastating to Democrats. It shows that Democrat women are shifting to voting for Republicans because of economic concerns and they trust Republicans on the issue more than Democrats.

But Pelosi rejected the notion that Democrats weren’t appealing to voters’ concerns. Mitchell wondered why the White House wasn’t winning over voters with their messaging, citing a recent New York Times poll showing independent female voters cared more about the economy than abortion.

“I dismiss that,” Pelosi said. “I can tell you that women’s concerns about their freedom are very, very much still very significant in terms of how they will vote. In fact, 80% of people who care about a woman’s right to choose say they will – it will determine who they vote for,” she argued.

Pelosi is delusional as we head toward November 8. Democrats have been campaigning on one issue and one issue alone – abortion. Pelosi praises Biden and what she describes as the good job he is doing as president as she denies that Democrats will receive a shellacking in the midterm elections.

“[He’s] done a spectacular job, he’s had a better two years than most presidents you can name, certainly in the recent generations,” Pelosi said of Biden. She listed COVID-19 relief legislation like the American Rescue Plan, as well as the Inflation Reduction Act.

Mitchell asked the speaker about members of the House who are speaking up and calling for new leadership in the Democrat Party. Pelosi brushed off that topic by saying those Democrats are only saying what they are to win their re-election races, not really to criticize her. “I say, just win, baby. Just win. If that’s what you have to say to win, fine.” Pelosi said the quiet part out loud. It’s only about winning because winning means retaining power.

Pelosi is so desperate to retain her own power at this point that she is actually saying that Democrats will keep control of the House and likely pick up some seats. Pelosi lives in her own special bubble. Her appearance on late night television with Stephen Colbert proved that.

“I believe that we will hold the House, and we will hold the House by winning more seats,” Pelosi told liberal host Stephen Colbert during a discussion on Oct. 3 about the upcoming elections.

“We won the 40 seats, then we lost some when Trump was on the ballot. We lost some of the Trump districts, but we held enough seats to hold the House with him on the ballot. He’s not on the ballot now. Oh, did I say his name? I didn’t mean to,” she quipped while referring to the 2018 midterm elections and the 2020 presidential election.

Pelosi conflates abortion with freedom and makes the mistake of thinking that all women voters vote as a bloc, same as other demographics. Just as Democrats take black voters for granted, Pelosi assumes voters are too stupid to understand that the Supreme Court didn’t ban abortion, it simply moved abortion back to the states and out of the control of the federal government. She is 82 years old and younger Democrats, especially younger female Democrat members of Congress are speaking out against the elderly leaders who cling to their positions of power. The message is it’s time for fresh blood. Pelosi, you may remember, promised that this would be her last term as Speaker of the House and she seems to be hedging on that with her happy talk about keeping the House and adding seats. She acts like she’s ready to run for the position again.

There is no clearer example of how out of touch with regular Americans Democrat lawmakers are than San Fran Gran Nan. Her head is still in August when Democrats briefly had the wind at their backs after the Supreme Court decision on Dobbs brought a wave of support for Democrats. That was short-lived, though, and by the end of September it was apparent that the tide had turned. Economic news continues to be bad. A trip to the grocery store is a slap in the face, especially for low income or fixed income people. Do they fill up their grocery cart to feed their families or do they fill up their gas tanks to get to work?

Democrats control Congress and the White House. The buck stops with them. It must sting to know that after all the trillions of dollars of big spending done by the Biden administration, essentially bribing voters to stay on board with Team Biden, now even Democrat women voters trust Republicans to take charge of the economy. Them’s the breaks, Nancy. Adios.
