Rudy Giuliani was campaigning for his son Andrew on Sunday afternoon in a grocery store on Staten Island. A store worker came up from behind Giuliani and slapped him on the back. He said, ‘Hey, what’s up, scumbag?’ as he walked by. Giuliani said the man was upset over the Supreme Court’s ruling that overturned Roe v Wade.

Andrew Giuliani is running in the Republican primary race for governor. There were several people standing with Rudy as the store worker assaulted the former mayor both physically and verbally. Granted, as far as assaults go, this one was pretty tame, but it was still wrong. Giuliani asked that the police be called and the worker was arrested. CBS News reports the attack was over politics.

Giuliani told the station that the man, a store employee, was angry over the Supreme Court’s decision on Friday to overturn Roe v. Wade. He said he didn’t fall to the floor but the slap was so hard he almost lost his balance.

Police say it happened just before 3:30 p.m. at a ShopRite store.

“All of a sudden, I felt this tremendous slap on my back or banging on my back. I didn’t know what it was,” Giuliani said.

“There were curse words and kinda threats. It seemed to have to do with abortion, you know, with the fact that he thinks women are gonna die,” Giuliani said. “He looked either inebriated or under the influence of drugs, and he wouldn’t stop, so a number of the security people came over, they restrained him, and I said call the police.”

If you watch the video in the tweet above, it is difficult to determine how strong the slap on Rudy’s back is and that he almost lost his balance. Giuliani is 78 years old. The worker, 39-year-old Daniel Gill, of Staten Island, was arrested and charged with assault in the second degree. Giuliani refused medical attention.

Giuliani is lucky the worker only used his hand to slap him. Cities across the country are experiencing high levels of violent attacks of all kinds. Andrew Giuliani issued a statement about violence in New York.

“Innocent people are attacked in today’s New York all of the time. This particular incident hit very close to home. The assault on my father, America’s Mayor, was over politics. We will not be intimidated by left wing attacks. As governor I will stand up for law and order so that New Yorkers feel safe again. This message has resonated with voters throughout my campaign, leading up to Tuesday’s primary.”

ShopRite’s parent company, Wakefern, issued the following statement:

“We are aware of an incident instigated by a store associate involving former Mayor Rudy Giuliani took place at the ShopRite of Veterans Road on Staten Island earlier today. Store security observed the incident, reacted swiftly and the police were notified. We have zero tolerance for aggression toward anyone.”

Local shoppers were surprised at the attack. They were quoted as saying that people have the right to their opinions but not the right to attack someone physically.

Rudy said he had the guy arrested in order to make an example of him. The assault may have been a minor one, all things considered, but it still needed to be addressed.

“The Supreme Court made a decision. You don’t go around [and] attack people because of it. I mean, go get it changed,” he said.

“I say to myself, ‘You know something? I gotta get this guy arrested,” I talk about broken windows’ theory all the time. You can’t let the little thing go.

“I’m like, ‘ I’m gonna get this guy arrested as an example that you can’t do this, And I said, also, in New York, we don’t prosecute people anymore and one of the reasons I brought crime down is I didn’t ignore stuff like this.'”

The ex-mayor also called into the Curtis Silwa Show on 77 WABC talk radio and said the slap felt like “somebody shot me,” and added: “I’m a 78-year-old who is in pretty good shape. If I wasn’t, I would have hit the ground and probably cracked my skull.”

New York’s primary elections will be held tomorrow. They guy who wanted to abuse Rudy gave Andrew Giuliani’s campaign some free press and the opportunity for the candidate to sound off on law and order.
