L.A. protesters during CAIR fundraiser: “Ilhan Omar, go to hell!”

A crowd of protesters met Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) in Los Angeles Saturday afternoon as she spoke at a fundraiser for the Council of American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). The Greater Los Angeles chapter held the fundraiser at a hotel in Woodland Hills where hundreds of protesters turned out against her appearance. The shouts from the crowd were colorful. CAIR didn’t release the number of people in attendance at the fundraiser.

The event at the fourth annual Valley Banquet, titled “Advancing Justice: Empowering Valley Muslims,” was sold out and closed to the public. The Los Angeles Police Department told City News Service that it had an unspecified number of officers working the event.

Omar, one of two Muslim women elected to Congress last November, has a history of anti-semitic attacks on supporters of Israel, especially in social media. She has used her platform as an elected official to criticize the strong bond between the only democracy in the Middle East, Israel, and America. As we know, her anti-semitic tweets were the initial reason for what became a toothless anti-hate resolution in the House of Representatives.

While a protest in a liberal big city like Los Angeles may seem unusual, Americans across the country are appalled by Omar’s attacks. She feeds into every ugly stereotype of Jews and then when someone finally calls her on it, she feigns ignorance. Nancy Pelosi, unable to find a spine strong enough to condemn Omar’s remarks even went as far as to claim the grown woman just doesn’t know what she is saying.

Pelosi said “she may need to explain” what she meant but “I feel confident that her words were not based on any anti-Semitic attitude.”

“She didn’t have a full appreciation of how they landed on other people where these words have a history and a cultural impact that might have been unknown to her,” Pelosi said about Omar.

Puhleeze. That was a stretch, even for Pelosi. Everyone knows exactly what Omar was saying with her criticisms of pro-Israeli support and she continues to spout the same trash. She’s bold and brave for only a limited time, though, as she does delete tweets that have come under fire.

The event only drew a small crowd of counter-protesters in support of Omar. CAIR has long fallen under investigation as an organization that supports groups labeled as terrorist groups, like the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas. Omar continues to support CAIR and fundraising for them is not a good look now, considering her rocky start in Congress.

CAIR is quick to point a finger at President Trump and most recently blamed him for the mass shooting in New Zealand. While President Trump condemned the murderous acts in two mosques by a madman spouting both left-wing and right-wing rhetoric, Trump’s expression of grief for those who lost their lives just wasn’t enough for CAIR. Or something.

The shooting led many to call out Donald Trump for his own harsh rhetoric against Muslims, including instituting a travel ban for those from a handful of Muslim-majority countries. The Council on American-Islamic Relations took it a step further, saying that Trump’s rhetoric was directly responsible for the rise in Islamophobia contributing to such attacks.

“During your presidency and during your election campaign, Islamophobia took a sharp rise and attacks on innocent Muslims, innocent immigrants and mosques have skyrocketed,” Nihad Awad, the Executive Director and co-founder of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a Muslim civil rights, and advocacy group, said at a press conference.

Appearing with and raising money for CAIR is hardly a way for Omar to show a change of behavior. Her anti-Semitic attacks will continue because Democrat leadership was too cowardly to demand better of her. Omar also is at the forefront of voicing support of the BDS movement while serving in Congress. I’ll not hold my breath for condemnation of that, either.

You can watch a livestream on Facebook of her 20 minute speech. She begins her remarks acknowledging the protesters outside. She says, “It is fascinating that people outside who have spoken about an oppressive Islam” now “gather to protest a Muslim woman in Congress. The Irony in that is very entertaining to me.” Then, of course, she states she couldn’t care less about what they say, though she literally just spoke about them.

I’ll end with this. If Omar wants to speak of irony, how about in her remarks when she claims Trump deliberately vilifies Muslims while trying to appear he doesn’t understand that his is doing that? That is exactly the excuse Pelosi made for her. Oh boy.
