Can Kyrsten Sinema win without suburban moms?

Believe them when they tell you who they are. I say that a lot these days. When the mask slips, politicians should be held accountable for their honest thoughts seeping out. Take the comments from a candidate for U.S. Senate, Kyrsten Sinema. Turns out, she doesn’t think highly of stay-at-home moms. As a matter of fact, she holds them in contempt and calls then “leeches”.

“These women who act like staying at home, leeching off their husbands or boyfriends, and just cashing the checks is some sort of feminism because they’re choosing to live that life. That’s bullshit. I mean, what the fuck are we really talking about here?”

Well … she sounds nice. She made the remarks during an interview with a Scottsdale, Arizona “night style” magazine in 2006. The insulting screed surfaced when she ran for office in 2012 and has now surfaced again as she runs against Rep. Martha McSally for the Senate seat vacated by retiring Senator Jeff Flake. It seems Sinema has quite a history of foot-in-mouth disease.

Sinema made the usual response when confronted in 2006 – she claimed it was just a joke. She said it was like a comedy skit, not to be taken seriously. It was just “a spoof.”

Sinema, the Phoenix New Times reported in 2012, “quickly walked back on [the stay-at-home moms statement], claiming that the interview was meant to be an over-the-top Daily Show-type spoof, and that she really did value moms of all stripes.”

I don’t know which is worse, thinking it is ok to just mock stay at home moms in the name of a cheap laugh in a skit or assuming her constituents are dumb enough to believe it was just a joke. Either way, she doesn’t sound as though she thinks too highly of the very people she now needs to win her election.

Sinema is a bisexual single woman who has no children. She falls into the liberal feminist trap by ridiculing stay at home moms for making a choice she didn’t make. The pro-choice women only really believe in choice if it is the same as their choice. Traditional lifestyles often get in the way of their dogma.

Martha McSally is also a single woman without children. She, however, is pro-life and votes that way. She voted to stop abortion after five months because that is when the unborn baby feels pain in the womb. Sinema voted against that bill. Sinema also votes consistently to fund Planned Parenthood with taxpayer money.

I am well aware that it is a privilege to stay at home and raise a family in today’s economy. A majority of women today are not able to do so. I was able to be home as our son grew up and for that I am thankful. It’s a personal choice that is made in the best interest of the family. In our case, my husband traveled the world for his job and never had a regular 9 – 5 career. He missed many holidays and birthdays and anniversaries. It was important, for us, to have one parent always there and available for our son. Sacrifices were made as we were a one-income family but as I said, I was fortunate to be able to do it.

I’m college educated and I was able to be an active volunteer in our community and at our son’s schools. The stay at home moms are the ones who are the chaperones for the field trips and the room moms who work with the teachers to do the extra things for classes, like the parties and service projects. I was a part of PTO leadership and put my skills from my previous professional life to use by fundraising and committee work. I was in my thirties when our son was born and, yes, it was a huge lifestyle adjustment to be home full-time. I began working as a 13-year-old babysitter for neighborhood kids and always held summer jobs until I entered the adult working world. So, yes, it is downright insulting to be referred to as a leech, just cashing paychecks.

Sinema is trying to run as a moderate candidate. She speaks in a soft voice and claims to use common sense in her voting decisions. She is trying to appeal to suburban women, to stay at home moms, now that it’s election time so this old quote has come back to bite her again. I think it’s worth recycling because it speaks to her true thought process. This is what she thinks about women.

I thought the mommy wars were a thing of the past. I’ve been out of that war for a while now, as our son is a grown adult, but this conflict has a long history. Too bad that third wave feminism isn’t much smarter than the first two. The winner of this race will be Arizona’s first elected woman to the U.S. Senate.  It sounds to me the common sense choice for Arizona is Martha McSally.
